The Day After

It's the day after the tidal wave of remembrance activities and inescapable television deluge of "all things 9/11." The tenth anniversary of that tragic day in our history garnered so many different angles and aspects that at some point it was just too much to take. Nothing was left unturned, underplayed or unspoken about from the usual talking heads of the airwaves such as Brian Williams to movie icon Martin Scorsese with his documentary which aired on CBS. Through it all I was bold over by a front page item from Tom Engelhardt (www.tomdispatch.com) in the Perspectives section of the Arkansas Democrat entitled, "Let's Cancel 9/11." His approach was most stirring and somewhat offered a bitch slap into another realm of reality. Stark paragraphs such as "Ask yourself this: ten years into the post 9/11 era, haven't we had enough of ourselves? If we have any respect for history or humanity or decency left, isn't it time to rip the Band-Aid off the wound, to remove 9/11 from our collective consciousness? No more invocations of those attacks to explain otherwise inexplicable wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and our oh-so-global war on terror." Ouch.  He goes on to emphasis,"Isn't it finally time to go cold turkey? To let go of the dead? Why keep repeating our 9/11 mantra as if it were some kind of old-time religion, when we've proven that we, as a nation, can't handle it-and  worse yet, that we don't deserve it?" Double Ouch. Engelhardt doesn't let up or let's anyone off the hook in this point-counterpoint rant where he unabashedly calls into question "American Hubris,"wrapped in war mongering and fear tactics gone amok. I applaud the Democrat Gazette for offering a host of viewpoints on 911 and it's ongoing societal impact. If you didn't get a chance to check it out, do so for a robust reality check. With that send off, let's go to the boards for the latest on what's really going on!

Night Moves in the City

I don't get a chance to read my Sunday paper with great detail often, but I made a point of reading Linda Caillouet's Paper Trails column headlines, "KARK: Censoring the story?" In case you've been out of the loop for the past week, this is item is another angle to the recent incident involving KARK's then Meteorologist Brett Cummings and the untimely death Mr. D. Williams in a bathroom hot tub during a Labor Day visit to a Maumelle home. Caillouet called into question the fact that KARK seemed to offer "soft ball" reporting versus the police report version reported elsewhere. She cites that KARK left out bits and pieces such as no mention of the silver chain which she stated was consistent with a dog collar while stating that Mr. Cummings was "at the home at the time of the death and we felt we should share this with our viewers," position. What's wrong with this picture you ask, well it seems that their version lacked the punch that usually they give most of their news stories. Caillouet pressed News Director Bob Heverling on the issue of whether they really covered the story and he replied that they knew "it was a story and it was important to at least cover the story." Caillouet balked at the tepid response and its not playing well with COP 24/7 as well.  After all, KARK is the "hot button" affiliate that brought the camera's to a local restaurant to witness local officials seeking those dastardly tax dollar dodgers and let's not forget that their Investigative reporters who don't mind knocking on trailer doors or calling out folks before the cameras for comment. It's called the "hot white light" of the media that's ready to pounce at a moments notice. However, it seems that the wattage was turned down some notches when it came to one of their own. Of course this entire matter is just terrible for everyone involved especially as the investigation continues and autopsy reports are released. Late last week Cummings made a statement to CNN citing his state of remorse prior to his attorney's Friday statement of his resignation from KARK. COP 24/7 spoke to Mr. Barbour concerning the incident which he described as one of the "worst things to ever happen in my life." It was Barbour who discovered Williams body with Cummings asleep next to him.  At this post time still no charges have been filed and the investigation continues. Stay tuned, it ain't over...

To TAX or NOT to Tax?

I'm torn about this Tax thingy for the city of Little Rock. Especially when we've learned that many and we do many local businesses have not ponied up to meet their own tax obligations. You've seen the stories and the aforementioned of KARK's video of tax collectors at Dizzy's Bistro trying to get paid. Now, I'm all for that approach, especially if I've got to come out of my pocket for any more spare change. But I'm still torn as I listen to local icon Annie Abrams decree that "it's only a penny" that will make the difference for parks, infrastructure and other stuff. Then there's shot caller Pulaski County Circuit Judge and LGBT ally Wendell Griffen who is staunchly opposed to giving this tax any chance not to mention a penny. In radio ads he states that low to moderate income folks just can't afford it. But City Board Representative Doris Wright believes that it will help Seniors in her Ward and from meetings that I've watched on LRTV, she hopes there will be some dollars for sidewalks in her area as well. So what do we do? First I say collect those damn tax dollars from all those businesses that have not stepped to the plate to share this responsibility. Secondly, let's not let up on collecting those property taxes that take up so many pages in the local paper and last but not least go to the polls and make your decision on if you want to give a penny for the cause or tell em that you don't give a damn. I'll make up my mind on the way to the polls. Hopefully I'll see you their!

Dixie Flying in the LGBTQ

You never know when the next flashpoint or raised eyebrow event will take place in this city. It's no secret that sometimes Gay sensibilities can go awry, off the rails or over the top. Such was the case at last weekends White Trash party held at the Northside haunt Sidetracks. So what got folks a bit stirred? Was it the assorted underwear, bras, panties or other sundry laundry hanging in the place? No.
Was it the campy couch and chair set with knick nacks? No. Was it the Trash Can punch which I heard had a hell of punch? NO. So what the hell was it. Well apparently organizers wanted to be as "authentic" to the theme by displaying a Dixie flag drapped behind the bar. Say what?  Apparently a few patrons were not amused and some expressed their displeasure at the sight of this racially tinged relic. I was certainly taken aback and stated to managenent that " we must be extremely careful about the symbols we embrace or choose to display." I was told that there was nothing meant by the flag and that it was being used as a prop for the event. However, I retorted that no matter its intended usage, that intention may not translate to a possible first time visitor or as I observed even sone regulars who found it off putting. I even heard one patron whom asked the question," where's your hood?" The idea was floated that maybe it should be removed if most found it offensive, but I remarked that "taking it down for the sake of being comfortable is not the answer. Let it stay but be prepared to defend your choice to do so. It was my hope that a teachable moment could be achieved not only for management but for customers as well." Personally I've always found the"white trash" or "Pimp and Ho's concepts a bit unsettling yet it seems others relish whatever value they can get from it.  We must learn that we can't expect the greater society to be "culturally compentent" of the LGBTQ lifestyle if we continue to be less competent to the symbols that have negative legacies. What's next flying Swatikas?

Kicking it COP 24/7 Style

ATL Goes all out for Black Pride 2011

Did anyone catch the ATL's Black Pride a few weeks ago? Unfortunately my hectic schedule didn't allow for me to catch it, but reports state that it was "off the chain." How could you miss with headliners like Mary J. Blige (pictured) who was a first time pride performer at the Park Tavern in Midtown and also songstress Brandy who made two appearances including one with none other than Nicki Minaj. Stop already! Did the SGL community of the ATL actually pull this off. You Damn Skippy they did and more! The local watering holes blew out the week with all sorts of "man hunting" opportunities with the ladies not missing a beat to this yearly over the top extravaganza. Not one but two "sold out" hotel room blocks, a marketplace and health expo, plus workshops and Black Summit. The Summit was spearheaded by Little Rock's former Brotha and Sistah's organizer Darlene Hudson which has been instrumental in producing the Summit for 5 years assembling an impressive array of participants. Themed“Revitalizing Our Commitment to Leadership, Diversity, and Community,” the meeting focused on the state of Black gay America and was bolstered by keynote speaker Earl Fowlkes, president and CEO of the International Federation of Black Gay Prides.


As I read more accounts and listings it was almost too much to take as I thought of what I was missing by not being their, but rather the uneven series of events that attempt to fill the bill here in Little Rock. Of course as I've said before and I guess I'll have to keep saying it, it's all about the planning and more important is the CASH on hand to produce such an event. Sponsorships and partnership's are vital to every event, but solid leadership, focused planning and good business practices are paramount to any successful project. I have no doubts that the effort to put this on took tremendous organizing and creative forces beyond belief. I can only dream of such a well crafted event on my own home turf. Not to mention at least a "thank you " letter from local organizers either personally or publicly.

In case you missed it, President Obama was back on the airwaves again attempting to get the Congress to as he stated, "stop the political circus," and get on with governing. If they can!  Every body's got low poll numbers and we are 14 months out before that voting thing takes place again. In the meantime, POTUS is on a tear to put the Republicans on front street with his latest job's proposal but while that's being looked over, some folks are circling the waggons about possible Medicare being sliced and diced. Night Moves in the City

Even though COP 24/7 was on the road this week, we are never and I mean never out of touch with the "In's and outs" of what's happening locally. Case in point, the recent news accounts concerning KARK's Meteorologist, Brett Cummings and the untimely death of Dexter W. who was found dead by police. The whole affair was making the wire rounds literally across the country and at first I wasn't sure if this had actually happened in my city. However, after paying closer attention to details, I learned that indeed this was the tragic situation. Unfortunately, as most sensational stories take off, it was the angle that Mr. Cummings was found in a "tub" with a dead man allegedly with a chain wrapped around his neck. As usual, the devil is always in the details and of course it's all about who you hear it from or where you here those important factors. It's no secret that in an age of "reality TV" vs actual reality, everything and I do mean almost everything is ripe for news coverage by someone. Mr. Cummings surely knew that the situation in which he found himself was not just going to be swept under the carpet and for his sake no one would ponder a thought about it. No matter the affluence, abject relation to "white privilege" or his access to the best attorney was not going to allow the media circus or hot glare of the spotlight not burn its course.  It's simply got the right mix to titillate, raise eyebrows and "gay tainted" fuel for raucous chatter that could easily be elevated to the absurd. Let's face it folks, we live in the land of rubberneckers and tragedy watchers waiting for the next train wreck ala "Casey Anthony." For some this is all they have to live for, others need to measure the suffering to their own and subsequently the fallout is flung far and wide for mass consumption. Meanwhile Cummings friends and supporters have ignited the social networks with their own sense of "swift justice" filled with sympathy and outrage. Facebook postings cite the insensitivity and pandering gossip as over the top bitchiness with calls for "folks to leave Brett Cummings alone."Not realizing that these catcalls will do nothing more than give the story "legs" and punchlines galore. Wouldn't it be great if we had such outrage for all Gays, Lesbians and Transgendered people who are murdered or brutalized across the state.. Yet while this entire circumstance gets investigated, at its core is the fact that the actions of these individuals have resulted in the death of one person, called into question their personal choices and set in motion significant ramifications that will reverberate throughout their families, if not the rest of their lives. Ultimately, we must all remember that life is not really a box of chocolates as spoken by Forrest Gump, but rather a box filled with the actual choices that we fill it with. I have some good news to share with you. I have written a big, new book! It is, without a doubt, the most personal work I've ever done. It's called HERE COMES TROUBLE. It contains two dozen short stories, all based on events in my early life, before I became a filmmaker. They tell how, from a young age, the "personal" in my life slowly boiled up and exploded, quite unexpectedly, into the political.

And next Tuesday, September 13th, you will be able to read these stories that, until now, I've only told to my close friends -- friends who, by the way, have long encouraged me to share them with you.

This is my first major book in nearly eight years, and it is, I believe -- if you'll allow me to say this without jinxing it -- the best damn thing I've ever written.

Considering how the act of writing is filled with so much self-loathing, being able to make a statement like that is, trust me, no small feat! (And you don't have to take my word for it -- Publishers Weekly just gave it their top starred review, calling it "outstanding" and a "triumph." I will not argue with these people; they have credentials and they know what they're doing.)

This is a book of 24 short stories -- but they are all nonfiction. From a chance encounter at the age of 11 with Bobby Kennedy to a tense moment in Virginia outside a rest room door marked "Colored"; from the gay kid in the neighborhood who was beaten to a pulp to the night some in my church cheered the news of the death of Martin Luther King; from a ruckus I raised at 17 that helped end a form of racial discrimination nationwide to becoming one of the first 18-year olds in the U.S. elected to public office; from planning my escape to Canada during the Vietnam War to having my newspaper raided by the local police; from confronting Reagan in a German cemetery as he laid a wreath on the graves of Nazi soldiers to surviving a terrorist massacre by showing up 20 minutes late -- this was my life before I even thought of putting the first roll of film inside a camera. Some of these stories are funny, others are devastating, but all of them have something to say, not just about yours truly, but about the country we once thought we were (and about the one we've now, incredibly, become).

Next Tuesday, September 13th, HERE COMES TROUBLE will be in your local library and bookstore. It will be available online, on eReaders and even on iTunes (the audio version that I recorded).

Op-ed: A Letter-Writing Campaign to the Next Generation

A night out at a Dallas bar left Donnie Pangburn sure that an understanding of the impact of HIV and AIDS hasn’t been passed down from one generation to the next.

Ignorance about HIV and AIDS became clear to me during, of all things, a fund-raiser for fighting the disease that I stumbled upon in June. While I was hanging out a bar in Dallas, a very young man stopped by to sell raffle tickets and informed me that the money was for “those poor old sad people.”
Who? I asked.
“You know ... them,” he answered with a wink.
Little did I know he was referring to me and millions of others living with this disease. I now know what a “breaking point” feels like. They say it takes one voice to start a movement, and you know what? They’re absolutely right.
“I am HIV-positive,” I said politely, “and I am not poor or sad.” From then on the evening was a blur (and a bust, since I spent it either in tears or in anger).
When the next morning arrived a nagging voice was telling me to “seize this opportunity.” I remember sitting in front of my laptop with tears running down my face and my fingers flying. Within hours, I had letters out to all of my friends, the Dallas Voice,the Resource Center of Dallas, AIDS Arms, and a few other organizations.
“Please know that regardless of how this hurt me personally or how angry I am, this is not about me,” I concluded at the end of my account of what had happened. “This is about the increasing number of men between the ages of 18 and 25 who are contracting HIV in our community. According to my doctor, it is spreading like wildfire. Something needs to be done.”
What I now know for sure is that we must educate our youth about HIV and AIDS because it was obvious on that night that something has been lost in translation.
I’ve sent letter after letter to radio stations, TV stations, the mayor, my friends across the country and across the pond, and every celebrity and their representation I could find that might listen to my story. I even started posting videos on YouTube. The Dallas Voice was the first to print my letter, which led to quite an uproar within our community, including some who said they wished I would die of AIDS.
But I kept writing letters.
Then The Advocatetook interest, bloggers posted my letter, I appeared on a podcast, and I plastered that letter all over Facebook. There was no way I was going to lay down and just take it. Something had to be done. Someone had to say “enough.”
Two months later I was asked to speak at a group of young gay men and women about HIV and AIDS. One of the employees told me that many of the youth describe HIV as “an old person’s disease.”
For the record, I am a 45-year-old man who still does yoga and jogs (when my knees allow it). HIV hasn’t stopped me from volunteering for organizations in Cincinnati, Memphis, Atlanta, and, for the last five years, at the Resource Center in Dallas. I’m also involved with the Hillcrest House and Raising Malawi, which helps children in Africa who have lost their parents to AIDS-related illnesses. But it’s comments like that which remind me there is still so much more that needs to be done.
For my part, I’ve created a Facebook page called “How Would You Know?” to help stomp out the stigma of HIV and AIDS and provide education on where to get tested. It’s not going to solve the world’s problems on its own, but my intention is to offer a one-stop shop (if you will) full of facts, stories of encouragement, breaking news, and the list of needs that goes on and on.
I’ve also developed a Youth Community Forum where education will come directly from physicians and vaccine researchers, or others who just want to tell their stories — like I have. I now understand what it means to be“called.” No one chooses their calling: it chooses you. I am just a small-town Kentucky-bred man who is, let’s face it, a nobody. But like any of us can, I come with a voice of passion, a desire for hope, and a fire burning inside me to change the world.
If my one little voice can do all this in less than three months, imagine if everyone spoke up and said “Enough.” What would be the state of the world in reference to HIV and AIDS? Would there be any stigma at all?

Who new that this little media experience would be of interest literally around the world and then some. Is E.T. checking in next? One Stop Shop HIV/AIDS

For HIV/AIDS consumers searching for health care linkages can be a daunting task if additional barriers persist such as transportation, remote locations, rural distances or other circumstances that could impede an individual to access care. In response to these cases, many cities are adopting the "one stop shop" health care model which allows clients to receive needed services in a setting that combines numerous medical opportunities ranging from initial testing to labs. The CDC ( Centers for Disease Control) is robustly promoting the premise "treatment as prevention" angle as another tool in the arsenal to fight HIV/AIDS. During The Living Affected/ NWA Advocacy conference held in March, end users cited that "connecting the dots" in the care pathways has been problematic and requires distinct attention from those agencies whom offer such outlets. Advocates and activist have listed this dilemma among the priorities that will prevent clients from falling through the medical cracks. For some newly infected, the "pathway" appears to be still somewhat confusing as well as frustrating when determining how to navigate the systems to care. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a dedicated data base or stream that is accessible on line. There is a dizzying array of websites covering subjects from A to Z. At this time COP 24/7 is researching the net to assess if there is a designated site with provider information for consumers also we will be listing local providers in a future post. Recently local physician Dr. Sonya Peppers M.D. has announced Comprehensive Care Clinic in Sherwood. Her clinical services will be developing the "one stop shop" model and is now open to accepting new patients. Philander Launches Gay/Str8 Alliance

As students returned to classes last month, what was taking place at Little Rock's Philander Smith College was what the young set holla as "off the chain." Enter, the campuses Gay/ Str8 alliance entitled "Be You", a first for the Methodist based institution. According to the group's President Trey," we wanted to offer a group that would bring all students together on the campus and allow us to further understand each other."  Another co-supporter, Le Ron cited that the group had met in a small gathering to talk about creating the organization and getting support from campus officials. After that meeting, it was decided that the name, "Be You" worked to cover everyone. He pointed out the lack of "male presence" at the launch but was hopeful that other men both straight and gay would eventually join in.  A 5 member board has been established and a set of planned activities include a Drag Show, movie night featuring the DVD, "Paris is Burning," and a topical open forum. The group kicked off their effort with a Dessert Social catered by schools F& B department which highlighted assorted pies, cakes, fruits and puddings. Community support was landed by ADH Outreach Coordinator, Willie R., Living Affected staff members and invited guest. Schedules and future developments will be posted in this forum. COP 24/7 congratulates PSC's "Be You."

Often COP 24/7 receives backtalk from citizens whom state that they don't know what's going on in the city and by the time they find out it's passed. REALLY? Summer Rainbow Blazes

The last summer holiday of 2011 gives us all a time to reflect on the first half of the year as we prepare to go forth riding out the remainder of 2011. All of this in the face of the ongoing assault on labor unions and collective bargaining options of those employed. For the African American community, with a staggering unemployment rate of 16.7 percent labor day comes with mixed signals to say the least. Even as the Congressional Black Caucus moved about the country with job fairs trumpeted by Congresswoman Maxzine Waters (D-California) who has not held back her frustration with President Obama's response. In Arkansas according to the Bureau of Labor (The full BLS report can be read by visiting the following link: http://www.bls.gov/lau/table14full10.pdf ) the rate falls closely to the national base at 16.5 percent, meanwhile Hispanics are averaging 7.9 percent. Later this week President Obama is scheduled to share his jobs plan with the nation on Thursday, just as other GOP candidates such as Mitt Romney has proposed lowering corporate tax rates, capital gains issues and enhancing states "right to work" initiatives. All of this is typical Republican Reagan dogma: advert paying taxes, claim that you are not making any money and attempt to keep workers on a short leashes with few rights. In case you didn't know, Arkansas is a "right to work" state, which means that those employed  at working on an "at will" situation that can allow them to be terminated with or without any cause. Thank God I studied those National Labor Law courses in college! Therefore along with the beaches, lakes and gatherings for the last summer throw down, be advised that Congress is back in town on Wednesday with a 82 percent disapproval rating. Its best that you make sure that you have your Representative on speed dial. COP 24/7 will add direct Capitol Hill links so you can always share your outrage with your law makers.

Interfaith Event in Little Rock to Mark 9/11 Sunday, September 11, 2011:

An interfaith event is scheduled in Little Rock's Clinton Presidential Center, 2.30 pm on September 11 to mark the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks of 2001. The event is titled "E Pluribus Unum -- From Many One."

It will include Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu leaders from the area and other invited guest.

Gov. Mike Beebe and Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola are to participate and UALR Chancellor Joel Anderson will preside.

The crowd will sing "America the Beautiful" and the event will be followed by a performance of "The Long Goodbye" by the students of Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School.

Both events are free. All this week COP 24/7 will post events, commentaries and observations surrounding the worst terrorist attack on American soil.

This 9/11 observance will follow closely after a 2PM event at the State Capitol.

Strengthening Arkansas: State of Identity

Organizers Southern Men's Alliance for Sexual Health and The Living Affected Corporation of the Strengthening Arkansas event October 15, 1-3:30 pm at the Downtown La Quinta Inn and Suites are working behind the scenes to assure that this ground breaking offering will reach a wider audience. COP 24/7 has joined that effort to share updates and breaking news about this empowerment session that will offer participant's a chance to dialogue on "what makes community and the who, what, when and where is my individuals place within it." As an outgrowth of concern from the CDC's Arkansas Team leader, local citizens also became concerned of the multi-generational disconnect stated by gay youth whom cited the lack of role models. The "State of Identity" platform is being planned to explore root causes, possible avenues of improvement while recognizing barriers and challenges. Self esteem and efficacy issues are also central to the discussion and the afternoon session will consist of "fast tracked" modules that will allow attendees to interact and extract "win-win" solutions. All of this activity is also supported by the forthcoming penned sign on,"Statement of Urgency," concerning Black Gay Men in Arkansas that will be deployed prior to the event.  It is open to citizens city wide and is FREE.  This programming is being offered as a public service from The National Association of Black and White Men Together,Inc, The Living Affected Corporation, Inc and SMASH. Stay tuned to this forum for updates, Call 501.612.2599 to share your interest or if you would like to contribute in-kind gifts, volunteer opportunities or contributions .

DSRA Royalty Competition

Save the Date, September 16- 17 for the annual Diamond State Rodeo Association's Royalty Competition Weekend. The event will began with Country Night at Sidetracks where current candidates will be featured throughout the evening. The Backtalk Session Part Two

And the beat goes on...COP 24/7 continues its backtalk session on your comments, observations, e-mails and personal conversations. Let me began by saying that I enjoy the engagement and the "back and forth" that a few of you either post to this site or send messages. At one point I had decided not to post those "anonomoyous" posting since I believe that if "you've got balls to say it, then you need to own it." I been perfectly clear that almost no topic is off the table in this forum. There are so many issues, dilemmas, subjects and controversies that are ripe for robust discussion on this platform as well as other mediums that offer that opportunity. So, if you got something to say, then by all means take the bull by the horns and throw your bull chip, if you dare. Ain't nobody scared up in here and you can be assured that if you bring some, be prepared to get some. With that said, let be about it....

Bug Chasing in "The Gift"

Earlier this week I was sent a link from a NABWMT brother who had participated in the documentary, The Gift which speaks to those individuals who submit themselves to the hopeless notion of being infected by someone with HIV. According to these indiviudals they have somehow surmized this as a misguided "rite of passage" to a sense of acceptance. As out of bounds as it seems, believe it or not, it's real. The video that COP 24/7 posted was merely a section lifted from our link partner, YouTube and it was not the entire feature. One reader posted that the video was one-sided and flawed citing that no one involved with the practice actually appears in that section. This may be so, but again that posting was merely only a section of the enitre production. The rest of the video was available on YouTube that would have offered a more indepth understanding to that post. In all fairness, I assumed that those interested and a few of you were interested enough to ask, that readers would go to the site and search "bug chasing or The Gift." Unforutanely the mistake made by COP 24/7 was to have provided a either a link or perhaps a clarification. In hindsight, I believe that posting the video was important, stirred thought patterns and supported a "teachable moment" for many who viewed it in disbelief. COP 24/7 strives to research, discover and deploy viable information in our campaign to inform, educate and empower. Outreaching to the Reverend AL

Its been about 3 months and counting since there was an outreach letter forwarded by LA Corp CEO, D. Levi to Rev. Al Sharpton concerning HIV/AIDS challenges and the political atmosphere from which local activist and advocates find themeselves. It was an earnest and searing letter that sought a reply from Rev. Al as well as solicited his possible personal intervention to the situation. Fast forward to the present and as far as we know, Rev. Al hasn't phoned home or anyone from the National Action Network which is his signature entity. What has happened is that Rev. Al himself is now too busy being a bonafide TV talk show personality featured on his new show Politics Nation on MSNBC. Shaprton's wit and wisdom has garnered him his own "electronic bully pulpit" to eschew or rather "chew" on all those that he wishes. His bite during the show allows him to spar with conservatives and newsmakers who are being called out on their opinions. Even though Sharpton follows the basic formula for such shows with supportive guest vs a adversary, he's bound by the telepromoter and time frames that only give him moments for his colorful off the cuff retorts. It's interesting TV if you want to watch it. Yet, his new career move has not gone unscathed with rasied eyebrows from some black journalist who have cited that a "real" journalist should have been approached for the spot. Then there's Sharptons ill-fated crusades from the Twanna Brawley incident to his flame throwing rhetoric during the Crown Heights riots some 20 years ago. So now we have to speculate why there's been no possible outreach from Sharpton. Did he get the actual letter and wasn't to busy being a media mogul to read it or did the local issues of a small southern city simply not meet the criteria for attention from such national figure such as Sharpton. We may never now exactly, but meanwhile it appears that local activist and advocates will have to do so some strategic planning and fundraising on their own and not wait for "Superman" or "Mighty Mouse" to save the day.

Pride in the City: What's the 411, 911 or 311?

Pride 2011 and all those sub-prides such as Little Rock Black Pride or the Club Goodtimes Pride have come and gone. Do you remember anything about any of it? Did you participate in any of the activities or events that took place? Well did you?  In case you did, then bravo and if not let's hear from you as to why not. But as we await that chatter, COP 24/7 would like to extend to everyone connected to those efforts  a "attaboy" from our vantage point, however with that said we believe that we need to hit the "houston we've got a problem," button.  What's the problem you ask?  Of course, this city has many issues that are as anoying as a pack of barking parmerainians following you throughout the day. You've talked about them over and over, so let's go through them once again for the record. There's No local gay oriented publication, No gay ghetto's such as Dallas's Cedar Springs, Houston's Montrose or Las Vegas's Fruit Loop. And lastly but not least, something called a "gay community" which no one has defined. Putting all of that aside, then we get back to the pride issue which at one point had a singular group handling the planning but met with demise in the last few years. COP 24/7 has done all the finger pointing that it's needed to do, rose to the occassion in 2009 with co-sponsorhip and now is pondering what's the fate or scope of this yearly event. Shouldn't Little Rock be able to produce something more than wet this, underwear that or turnabout whatever? In the past there have been a slew of ideas and suggestions. Some went well while others fell flat. But nevertheless, surely if the ball can get rolling early, only dedicated folks come to the table to make it happen and engage the local networks to support the vision, 2012 could step off in a new direction. Anybody game for that big ass idea or is it going to be the same ole same old. COP 24/7: The BackTalk Session

Welcome to the third month of the third Quarter of 2011. Since our bold return to the board earlier this year we've tapped out a boat load of words on numerous topics from the political mash-up in Washington to what's up with Lady Oprah. We've made it our business to look and re-look for not only items that will not only make the cut, but perhaps be "cutting" in their own respective. Nothing has been off limits in this forum and its our goal to continue to bring you the who, when, where and yes, even the "WTF" news from all angles. Stay locked and loaded to COP 24/7, not because we told you, but rather because you should want to stay in the info loop.

Shape Shifting: AIDS in Arkansas

COP 24/7 has continued to report and inform our readers as well as the public alike on the latest HIV/AIDS news, links, updates and breakout data. Such news can be overwhelming therefore we attempt to filter and dissect the information for basic consumption. We are fortunate to be hooked up to a ever-widening network of content providers, news links, "white papers," and briefings. In a Southern AIDS Coalition teleconference today, we were apprised of more interesting and possibly disturbing events dealing with the HIV/AIDS health dilemma. Patrick Packer, CEO of Southern AIDS Coalition led a discussion on the 12 Cities project which comprises of the government utilizing a cross agency collaboration in addressing HIV/AIDS services for the 12 municipalities with the highest number of people living with AIDS in the United States. The program is another piece within the Obama administration's National AIDS Strategy which celebrated its first anniversary this past July. SAC wanted to inform those on the line of the develops of this project and update those apart of their Southern Initiative that their will be funding shifts related to new computations based on those "living" with HIV/AIDS. Some states such as Georgia and Virginia could see increased "top ceiling" funding while states such as Arkansas may see shortfalls. Most glaring in this news is the fact that new CDC regulations denote that certain thresholds must be met despite any funding differences. Even as these stipulations are being put into place, Arkansas has no budgeted line item slated for HIV/AIDS and are you ready for it, "never has." Furthermore, there has been no real campaign mounted to add a line item to the budget. Be it a lack of organized efforts or either lack of "political will," it doesn't matter, the state has decided that this health crisis doesn't get state dollars but rather depends on flat funded Federal dollars. Adding fuel to this fiery mess, is also the absence of comment on anything significantly AIDS related from Governor Beebe, as well as his selected leader Dr. Paul Halverson of the Arkansas Health Department. Also missing in action is the Governor's appointed 19 member HIV Task Force formed by Act 842 of 2007. The mission of the group was to study ways to strengthen  HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment among Blacks, Hispanics and other minorities in the state. For the record, meetings took place around the state, an audacious report was completed, acknowledgements of the later SHARP Report but from there lies the rub. But there has been little to nothing else done or heard from this monthly mysteriously meeting entity. I read their report therefore I can say that with certain fact absolutely nothing has taken place. So what do we have here? Well, it seems that officials are not sounding the alarm that Arkansas has the highest unmet need in the nation. Meanwhile, the statistics speak to the issue as it's determined that 4,769 Arkansans are now "not in care," many of them from the task force's group target. Plus that info coupled with the CDC report that there's been a 48 percent increase with the Black MSM community should surely get some one's attention.  And lastly but not least, all of this comes on the heels of a new HIV-STD Section Chief, Tina Long. who will need some time to get up to speed on the legacy of AIDS in Arkansas. Session calls for Strengthening Arkansas

The Southern Men's Alliance for Sexual Health has teamed up LA Corp Inc. and The National Association of Black and White Men Together, Inc to present a empowerment forum, October 15th from 1pm to 3:30 pm at the La Quinta Inn Suites in Downtown Little Rock. The programming was formulated as a platform to discuss a plethora of issues ranging from self perception to determining "what or who is the community." The event will be facilitated by members of SMASH as the newly formed group joins other local community based organizations in the effort to address race, stigma and homophobia both internal and external. Organizers believed that such a multi-cultural, multi-generational "experience" was warranted, in lieu of recent information derived from informal focus groups and social networking sharing. Admission is Free. That event will take place concurrent to Midland Regional/NABWMT meeting also taking place during the weekend which features a Welcome to Little Rock mixer, Friday October 14, 7pm. Suggested donation is $5.00 with a portion donated to The Living Affected Corporation. Naked Horizons

Last week we re-posted a item from Samantha R., who share with the world a "women thou are loose" expression that was at its core, raw, unapologetic, passionate and above all a testimony that laid naked for all to see. COP 24/7 was fortunate to get her permission to share that tour de force tribal outcry that proves that none of us really knows lies beneath each of our body shells. I got to know "Sam" over the last few years and I can attest to her willingness to "to keep it real" while dealing with all the issues that it takes to make it in this world. Her boldness through this prose, should be seen as "teachable moment" to comfort us all whom have emotional baggage and stirred souls that at some point must be set free to allow us to move forward. Therein lies the premise for us all to "get naked."Meanwhile this post is so timely as we prepare for an upcoming empowerment session entitled Strengthening Gay Arkansas, October 15 in Little Rock. Part 2: Naked for a Cause by Samantha R.

I was sitting in my den today; thinking and preparing for the rest of my day and week. I found myself thinking about my hysterectomy, more so, the actual procedure. You see on the outside, my womanhood was healthy. However, on the inside, my womanhood was wounded; ill, broken, and all messed up. My womanhood needed fixing. When sitting down with my doctor, she explained the procedure. She shared with me that she would be making a small incision in my lower abdomen and opening and entering through my belly button. She was then going in and removing what was making me ill, in pain, unable to enjoy the feelings from my love when we made love, bleed, damaged, etc. The day of the surgery, I remember talking to the anesthesiologist and saying, “Will you be shaving me for this procedure or doping me up really good so I won’t feel the pain? Will you make certain I get through this and wake up”? And a few hours later, felt like minutes, I was awaken.. I remember waking up in absolute pain, hungry, and the nurse had informed me that for a slight moment, during surgery, my numbers went up and they were fearful I was leaving this earth, but I made it out.. ALIVE, WELL, WITH THE BAD STUFF REMOVED, THE ICKY STUFF SCRAPED, and in time, I should feel like a new woman! I remember thinking, there I was out, open, exposed, with the risk of death or injury, losing what I thought defined my womanhood and its existence, and suffering great pain and obstacles afterwards… BUT NOW, I am healed, feel more like a woman than I have effort felt, able to receive love with love making, and the PAIN IS GONE! You see, with exposure comes great risks. Often, the risks become reality and it hurts OH SO BAD, but once it’s over, healing takes place and restoration shows it beautiful being that always dwelled inside of me, you, each one of us.
In my previous note, “Naked for a Cause”, I left using myself and a very small part of my truth and story WIIIIDE OPEN! I asked the question in the end, am I alone? I asked the question before, what if we were all NAKED, vulnerable, cut down our center with our emotional and mental exposed? I asked, how would, if we would, receive one another? I have come to learn and understand that although my exposure is for me, it entirely for me. I take the risk of exposing myself for the edifying, restoration, healing, and the great need of relief for others, my friends, my family, my community. Yes, we are all responsible for my own paths, but what’s found and discovered at the end of those jagged roads is for us to set into the atmosphere and gift to others our “coming out”.
How would you feel if you knew you, and your life, was being watched by others assigned specifically to you? Do you believe that people come into your life for a reason, a season, or merely a chance? Do you believe that your story, your journey down the road less traveled, is only for you and not to be shared?...to be locked in a closet full of dried up skeletons? What if I told you that someone’s liberty is riding on you? What if I told you that someone’s hope was riding on you and your coming out, your story, your compassion, your authenticity, your very own liberty? What if I told you that it’s your hand that will catch someone who jumped over the bridge and realized they made a mistake and is hanging on for dear life? What if I told you that you are not only an over comer, but the one that shoots Goliath in the head with your rock and sling shot and saves your entire army, land, better yet, community?

The fact of the matter is that my community, your community, our community is exposed daily with great risks.. And although many of our community mates fail to be open, honest, naked, and in most cases, refuse to ask for help, the consequences of their actions, our actions, are with great consequence, often ending in tragedy, and becomes a reward to those that seek to abolish our communities and their existence. Young girls are mothers and/or motherless, young boys are fathers and/or fatherless, dying, killing, selling illegal substances, and taking life and matters into their own hands. Mothers and fathers are absent in the lives of their children and present in alcohol bottles and crack pipes. The innocence of a mother’s youth is being stripped away, by the minute, and all that is left is an adult that is soliciting herself/himself to the streets; a road mostly traveled filled with pimps, drug dealers, abusive men and women, and other temptations so great no amount of money could buy them back their righteousness and salvation. Fathers have found value in money, sex workers, and their own dreams of personal gain and success, not their children! The homeless, there seems to be no place for them. There seems no place for them except; homeless shelters, food banks, social security and disability applications that most often read, DENIED. There is lack of a permanent address. Questioning rehabilitation, are the homeless shelters consumed with providing shelter and doing their best to provide tools for the homeless to go back into society and make something of themselves or are they only consumed with that and not how the homeless got there?

And then there seems to be a new issue, well has always been, sexual minority folk. Struggling to find their place within themselves, let alone society, where could they go? Who could they turn to? Turn to a God that was described by man and man in authority and the position of leadership as a hateful, angry, God full of wrath, rebuke, judgment, and rage? Surely, those folk couldn’t look up! Surely, those folk couldn’t understand love, relationships, responsibilities, and hope because all of that was stripped away before hope, possibilities, and prosperity could be an option. For many of them, there is no cross road for these folk to even fathom. The only road to be traveled is one of confusion, despair, sickness, guilt, low self esteem, suicidal thoughts, and sex crazed havoc. All of these characters, people described are people that dwell in reside in our communities. The part that saddens me is that we all know it. We all see it. We all read about it. We all have a cousin, an aunt, an uncle, an acquaintance maybe that is one of the people I just described. Now, I would ask the question, “Would you be willing if they were completely naked”? Unfortunately, I can assume that because they aren’t being helped now and they aren’t naked, well…NEVERMIND.
The bottom line is this; we all are need of an affirmation of David, to help us defeat and bring to an end, our Goliath and for many of us, our whole lot of Goliaths. When in fact will our community, your community, be your responsibility? When will we become the surgeons? In a matter such as this, a degree isn’t required to go inside the hearts, emotions, and minds of our brothers and sisters, all the while risking exposure for an unexpected end that offers healing and a great relief.

3 Decades of HIV/AIDS: Deconconstructing The Gift

 

This forum has continued to highlight as well as showcase the latest information concerning HIV/AIDS in Arkansas. Even as new drugs have come through the medical pipeline, individuals are discovering regimens that have expanded their lives, their remains much that continues to reveal itself in dealing with this health dilemma. Such is the puzzling phenom as "Bug Chasing," which is the subject matter of the posted video which was created several years ago but this forum felt that it should be revisited. This behavior is described as individuals whom seek out infected persons to be mutually infected due to their despair with the health crisis and the issues of "fitting in" the gay social construct. Especially gay youth who lack safe spaces or those who desire social outlets other than local bars. Striking as this may seem, it is still taking place across the country and this portion of the documentary attempts to deconstruct this approach by inquiring with those who have taken the action of seeking "the gift" or "positive gifting." It is the reaction of the LGBTQ community in regards to social networking and the power of the Internet as a sexual frontier which calls for more dialogue. Op-ed: The Tragic Consequence of Being an Anonymous Minority Statistic

There are thousands of same-gender-loving people within the congregations of black churches. Because I have ministered from their pulpits for more than 40 years, I am very aware of how these churches’ refusal to address issues such as HIV/AIDS has gravely crippled us. But there are other more commonly overlooked culprits.
When black newspapers ignore and overlook the importance of pertinent issues that impact the lives of gay African-Americans, they tacitly approve and condone acts of hatred and homophobia. Black publications depend heavily on financial support from religious institutions and indirectly these papers must shoulder some of the responsibility for the spread of the virus because an innumerable amount of anti-gay sermons have been preached from their pages.
In my new book Love Won't Let Me Be Silent, I call out the tremendously negative influence that hip hop has had on the nation in regard to the LGBT community. Although much of the homophobic language has been toned down in contemporary rap lyrics, there remain cleverly disguised, subliminal homophobic messages that make it absolutely clear being gay is totally unacceptable and definitely not manly.
Personally, I feel that most hip-hop artists will never truly fully embrace same-gender-loving people publicly. What's more, some gay and lesbian hip-hop artists conceal their orientation, as asserted by Terrence Dean, author of Hiding Within Hip-Hop. The silence contributes to the rise in attacks against both HIV-positive and -negative same-gender-loving people
To see the tragic consequence of anonymity on display, one need only recall Oprah Winfrey’s disturbing interview with J.L. King, author of the controversial book On The Down Low: A Journey into the Lives of Straight Black Men Who Sleep with Men. King’s alarming confession of what life was like on the down low immediately garnered him national fame, and King became a trusted HIV prevention activist and educator, especially to Black America.
Immediately after that interview, a series of articles published in Essence, Vibe, and the Washington Post attempted to expose a secret sexual cultural phenomenon called "the Down Low." Although those articles caused somewhat of a stir, none were as troubling as the cover story of the August 3, 2003 issue of the New York Times Magazine entitled "Double Lives On The Down Low." Written by journalist Benoit Lewis, the work sent a shockwave through the African-American community as the article aired some very dirty laundry.
Among the story's many shocking insights, the article revealed that after 25 years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic not only had HIV infection rates steadily climbed for African-American women, but black religious institutions, in particular, created and supported homophobia within black communities. The result of this homophobia, according to the article was the birth of a subculture of dishonesty and denial with respect to black masculinity, desire, and sexuality. This subculture sabotaged any attempts at HIV prevention or treatment, the article said.
Is it any wonder then that the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs' researchers recently published a report that found LGBT people of color were subjected to a disproportionate number of attacks — 70% of the 27 murder victims in 2012 were LGBT and HIV-affected people of color. That was part of a 23% increase over the previous year in murders of LGBT and HIV-affected people across the United States, the second highest yearly total ever recorded.
Last week I awakened to find this startling message in my Yahoo inbox: “Iowa student dies after brutal beating in which attackers shouted gay slurs.” While this heinous act does not surprise me, it does sadden me deeply to see another young black man brutally murdered. Police say it was not a hate crime, but not in dispute is that Marcellus Andrews, 19, was heard being called“faggot” while a group of attackers beat him on his own front porch.
Simply put, even though Americans pride ourselves on living in a technically and socially advanced democratic society, in many ways we are hypocrites. America has allowed bigots and religious extremists to enshrine countless unethical laws that illegally deny same-gender-loving people equal rights, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Too many religious leaders and right-wing politicians are allowed to use the Bible to justify their outlandish actions. What's worse, many of them feel no remorse for their homophobic statements that fuel attacks on innocent people of all sexual orientations, and of all races.
Nowhere is this attitude of attack and ignore more prevalent than among our presidential candidates, many of whom extol divisive and inflammatory rhetoric while the country reacts with barely a notice.
We, as the black community must evolve. But we, as a nation must evolve, as well. We must move forward and embrace the more noble aspects of our humanity. Needless to say, it won't be easy; it never is! Nor is living easy, particularly for HIV individuals who are reading this and who will become victims of assault, or for the thousands in the LGBT community, white and black, male and female, who desperately and simply want to live as God created all His children to live — happily and freely.

NAKED for a Cause by Samantha Rochelle

So, I wonder…what would happen if we were all NAKED! I’m not talking about Naked in the shower, in bed, at the doctor’s office, maybe even on a stripper pole. I’m talking about totally, completely, without a single piece of fabric, NAKED!? And taking it a step further, what if we all were NAKED and cut emotionally and mentally WIIIDE OPEN?! Wow! Talk about no need for perception then..Ha! What would happen if someone asked you the simple question, “How are you”? Having become that exposed, would we still be able to lie and fabricate our story and say, “Oh, me? I’m great! I’m whole! I’m awesome”!

 Would we search for “cover up” words and say, “ I’m ok. All is well. Things are good and I am good”!? OR WOULD WE ANSWER THE UNEXPECTED, “I’m not doing well at all. I’m hurting so bad and don’t know what to do about it. It pains me to think of where I am right now. I have screwed up and can’t forgive myself. I’m struggling with my demons. I’m a big liar! I’m lost and don’t know what to do. I gave all of me and they cheated. I blame others for my mishaps. I just hurt him/her because of my own insecurities. I judge others because of my fear and understanding. I’m thinking about jumping over the bridge today and ending it all. Life doesn’t seem worth living. I’m miserable and looking for company.

I never got over my past ish and so because I don’t know how to deal with it, I hurt others for a little sense of fulfillment”. OUCH! How then, would we be able to receive others? How then, would be able to love others, in spite, of themselves? How then would we be able to embrace others? Would we deny them of their needs and refuse to help? Would we run away from them because we are feeling the same way? Would we choose to not welcome them in because it’s too much responsibility of us to actually be our brothers/sisters keeper? OR, would we actually be able to connect with others? Would we be more willing to accept others? Does being “REAL” actually mean the desire to be a person or accept a person of authenticity?

  

What would have if we laid our carnal, fleshly, filthy selves before one another? Would we get our brushes, cleaning supplies, buckets, and help to clean each other up? Metaphorically speaking, would we throw each other to the wolves, burn each other up with the leaves, or take the trash to the dumpster? Folks, this is a crucial time! These questions aren’t just for Christians, Muslims, Jehovah witnesses, atheist, agnostics, science believers..It’s posed for us all! I don’t have some great scripture read for you, quote, or any of those things. I am simply moved by compassion and a filthy, dirty, human being full of mistakes, hardships, hurt, anguish, confusion, wrongs, and struggles with the desire to compel …. The desire to compel and challenge…..The desire to compel, challenge, and hope with urgency that each of us will stand or lay NAKED , pour out truths, and offer up our authentic selves to one another!

You see, not only am I dying daily and constantly seeking healing and restoration on the inside out, but so are so much more of some of us! I look and remember some people that I know that are in jail paying for crimes they have committed. But, I also acknowledge, look, and remember some people that I know that are paying for their crimes and conditions right where they are. Just because we aren’t serving jail time, doesn’t mean we aren’t bound by chains of affliction, loss, and the need of affirmation and someone to meet our needs! At least, in prison, there is or should be some sort of rehabilitation plan…Where are our rehabilitation plans equipped with ; therapists, ministers offering forgiveness and hope, etc….

So, again, I pose the original question, What would happen if we were all NAKED, emotionally and mentally WIIIIDE OPEN? What would happen if I stood before you and told you that I was NAKED, WIIIDEreunited with the only man I ever loved and having him taken away from me for 7 years in prison and being reunited with him ONLY to discover that we have changed and the LOVE IS GONE, settled for lovers that were beneath my potential and should have never been a part of my journey, had casual, meaningless sex and put myself at risk of a sexually transmitted disease that I couldn’t get rid of because of the voids I needed filled, felt and sometimes still feel TOTALLY MISUNDERSTOOD, forsook several friends, cheated on a spouse or partner, damaged a person’s heart for seemingly ever, attempted to kill myself a time or two, had thoughts of giving up my beautiful son because the responsibility was too great, resented my father and mother, experienced a jealous spirit towards my sisters, had a need to please everyone regardless of how I suffered because of it, currently in a condition full of recent mistakes and not sure how to get out, questioned God and his existence ,etc…

There I am folks, NAKED, WIIIIDE OPEN, with a past and even some present that I battle and struggle with daily- only, most of the time, having my faith to hold on to with EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE! What if, I’m not alone???????

AIDS Walking in Central Arkansas

Saturday, November 5, 10:30 - 5 pm in the Rivermakert Pavilion will mark the 9th Annual Arkansas AIDS Foundation AIDS Walk. The event will feature State Representative. Kathy Webb (D) as the keynote speaker. Organizers have stated that proceeds pledged during the walk will fund client services including labs, medications and physician care. COP 24/7 received a Facebook blurb concerning this event, however their was no organizational clarification on those who posted the information. For instance are they Board Members, volunteers or staff members.  Even though the posting has the AAF logo and in another post refers to the "website," as a visitor or web surfer how would you know exactly who these folks are or if this is a creditable event. I did later find a corresponding name embedded on the site. Furthermore, while mentioning the "website" where they state future pledge forms and other info will be posted, I noticed that the AFF website has not been updated in some time. Where are the latest Arkansas AIDS statistics? No CDC announcements or community links are presented even though AAF touts that they network with other organizations. How would a visitor really know if they needed to contact someone else other than AAF?  In my opinion, the images anchoring the site could use a diversity upgrade for sure.  Even more interesting is the fact that if the AIDS Walk has a 9 year history, where's that history on the website or any place else.?  Previously Me and my partner participated in this walk several years ago raising about $500 in pledges and contributions. However, we never received an acknowledgement of that effort nor was their any follow up on subsequent walks. Since then and even most recently this outing has never maximized its ROI ( return on investment) potential for the organization nor has it been a significant "rallying cry" within the community. In other words, who wants to contribute to something that you can't find out anything about. How much did you raise? How many folks turned out? Who were your Top Tier sponsors? How many clients did you really help?  Hey guys, this is your fundraiser 101 shout out from COP 24/7. If you need more just let us know, we've got plenty to share.    

NABWMT: Welcome to Little Rock 2011

The "Welcome to Little Rock Mixer" kicking off the NABWMT/ Midland Regional Meeting October 14-16, is set for Friday night October 14 at the La Qunita Inn, 617 South Broadway, 7 pm -until in the Clinton Conference Room. A portion of  the $5.00 suggested donation will benefit The Living Affected Corporation, a local 501c3 community based organization. This networking event is described as an evening of mixing and meeting a spectrum of diverse individuals both locally and visitors attending the weekend meeting. A Cocktail Buffet will be offered, music and door prizes will be the highlights. The National Association of Black and White Men Together is a gay, multiracial, multicultural organization committed to fostering supportive environments dealing with racial and cultural barriers. The group engages in educational, political, cultural and social activities as a means of dealing with racism, sexism, homophobia, HIV/AIDS discrimination and other social justice issues. The Midland Regional is a regional subset of the national entity encompassing both Midwest and Central states. The Midland provides assistance to existing chapters in these states while supporting the development of others as well as educational programming. This is the first visit by either group to the area.  A local host committee is being sought to facilitate registration, chaperoning and producing events during the weekend. Local Venues get Lower prices

Wal Mart is not the only folks in town who have lower prices. So do the local LGBTQ venues, who have done a micro-price roll back on beverages. Triniti, Off Center, Pulse and 610 have "price buster"  evenings with lowered drink prices for their patrons. At one time prices for beer hovered around the $4.00 mark with other libations hitting the $6 and upwards. Surprisingly, those prices reflected "non-call" brands, therefore, premium brands could cause you "shot shock" if you were not aware. Of course all of this relates to the current economic upheaval and those dastardly"sin taxes" that plague the industry locally. At this time there are beer offerings from $1.75 at 610 to getting the big boy pitcher at Sidetracks for $7.00 or it's $4.00 little brother. Also at Sidetracks on Friday nights you can help out your favorite organization with Keg Party opportunities that allow the groups to raise funds for their causes. Don't forget to check out Happy Hour pricing to assist in making those precious dollars go a bit further. Supporting the local establishments allows us all to have meeting and greeting places to share.
