Worlds AIDS Day 2007: Taking the Lead....


In preparation for this year’s World AIDS Day, December 1 2007, our online partner, the Kaiser Family Foundation has published a intense guide that highlight's several new resources that may be of interest, including updated HIV/AIDS fact sheets and web tools, and developments in some of our global public education campaigns designed to raise awareness about HIV. We at CorneliusONpoint has an ongoing commitment to keeping this health dilemma front and center with our readers and beyond. Especially within the people of color communities which have been overtly affected unilaterally. We encourage you to stay informed, get tested reguarly and "Take the Lead" in accountability.
Fact Sheet: The Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic – This fact sheet has been updated with new data from UNAIDS that reflect major revisions based on refinements in methodology, increased data availability, and growing knowledge about the natural history of HIV disease. The fact sheet includes data on the global impact of HIV/AIDS by region, on women and young people, and data on the global response.
GlobalHealthReporting.org – Both the HIV/AIDS Overview and the Facts at a Glance sections have been updated with the latest UNAIDS data. A new video library provides HIV/AIDS-related cover footage, rights-free, to journalists and filmmakers.
GlobalHealthFacts.org – Several indicators have been updated with the latest UNAIDS data, including the total number of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, and the total number of AIDS deaths worldwide.
KaiserEDU.org – This site contains numerous HIV-related materials, including a recently added narrated slide tutorial on Women and HIV in the U.S.
KNOWIT – Kaiser is working with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the HHS Office of HIV/AIDS Policy, to help people connect with HIV testing locations through a new text messaging service. Mobile phone users can send a text message with their zip code to “KNOWIT” (566948), and receive a message back, within seconds, with information on nearby testing sites.
Rap-It-Up – This Emmy Award-winning campaign, a partnership between BET and the Kaiser Family Foundation since 1998, promotes HIV/AIDS awareness among the African American community. BET’s World AIDS Day lineup includes a special episode of the music countdown show 106 & Park, with HIV-related discussions and celebrity guests, and an encore presentation of What U Know Bout That? Rap-It-Up Sex Quiz, in which BET personalities quiz young adults about safe sexual health practices.
It's Your (Sex) Life – As part of their decade-long Emmy and Peabody Award-winning partnership to empower young people to help end the spread of HIV, MTV and Kaiser will debut a host of on-air and online efforts on World AIDS Day. On Saturday, December 1, Ludacris will join with Peter Gabriel, Razorlight, Annie Lennox and more than forty leading South African musicians at a Nelson Mandela-led event to raise awareness and funds to help eradicate HIV/AIDS. MTV News will also debut a new video log (vlog) feature on Think.MTV.com, in which Marteniz, a young HIV-positive man, shares his story and the day-to-day realities of living with HIV.
Global Media AIDS Initiative (GMAI) – The GMAI mobilizes media companies around the world to develop HIV/AIDS-related programming that informs the public and challenges stigma related to the disease. Detailed descriptions of the GMAI’s recent efforts – including media-related activities in Africa, the Caribbean, and Russia – are available in its quarterly newsletter.
Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS (CBMP) – The CBMP’s public information campaign, LIVE UP, will debut a new half-hour television magazine program in early December. LIVE UP: The Show will inform viewers about HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean and fight stigma associated with the disease in the region.
Through a partnership with Digicel, a leading regional mobile phone provider, the CBMP will also launch on December 1 2007, a new text messaging initiative that will allow people across the Caribbean to receive free information about local HIV testing centers and other resources via their mobile phones.
The CBMP also recently announced a new collaboration with the GMAI to make HIV/AIDS-related programming content and other resources available to radio and television audiences across Haiti.
African Broadcast Media Partnership Against HIV/AIDS (ABMP) – The ABMP, a coalition of more than 53 African broadcast companies in October launched the first authentic African reality show – Imagine Afrika – in which young Africans compete in challenges that address some of the most intractable problems facing local communities, including HIV/AIDS, food security, housing and sanitation. The show’s goal is to demonstrate the power of personal initiative, self esteem and leadership in achieving an HIV-free generation and a better future for all Africans. A special 48-minute episode will be broadcast Africa-wide on World AIDS Day.
Also launching on World AIDS Day is the third phase of the ABMP’s pan-African HIV/AIDS education campaign, It Begins with YOU, launched on December 1, 2006. The third phase focuses on stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. ABMP member companies will also broadcast a 24-minute documentary on stigma produced with the support of UNESCO.
