Stuff bustin out all over....a double take!!

My inbox and other resources are talking about the fast, furious, fascinating and the down right foolishness that keeps busting out from every angle. Talk about an exorcist moment of spinning and spewing. Of course, we are determined to keep up with it all as it breaks, unbreaks and simply just breaks open in this age of info overload, 24/7. So, let's get this madness started...

Apology 3.0 As I expected, B-baller, shotcaller, Tim Hardaway has decided that one apology isn't enough and has offered at least 3 ( yes- 3) versions of why he didn't mean what he said in a Miami interview concerning possible gay team mates or anyone else gay for that matter. The mea culpa's could roll out his mouth fast enough when he was: (1.) banned from the All-Star events in Vegas, (2.) picketing of his business interest. and (3.) the thought that his tirade might cause him future endorsements and earnings. Meanwhile, John Amaechi, stated that he didn't accept the apology (none of them) and felt that there was no sincerity in the statements. We couldn't agree more. Sounds like Mr. Hardaway is a prime candidate for Mr. T's, Pity the Fool, reality show.

HERE TV! In case you haven't noticed, gay media outlets are bustin out all over with a host of original programming, specials and online interactivity. The highly acclaimed and international phenom, The DL Chronicles, from the creative team of Quincy Lanear and Deondray Gossett, will join the line up in 2007. This fascinating look into the "sexually duplicitous and secretive lives of African American men on the "low low," is expected to be well received by the HERE TV audience. If you are Central Arkansas Comcast Digital subscriber, you too can get in on the action. For preveiws go to www.hereTV.com/videoplayer

Rainbow Iraq. Thanks to a savvy reader we were given the update on the alledged killing spree of Gay Iraqi's as apart of a sworn fatwa from leading cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. Despite the recent crack down on violence, it's been reported in an online blog, www.iraqilgbtuk.blogspot.com, that gay's have been tracked by fundamentalist militas and Islamist death squads for crimes against Islam. The website was still posting as of this entry, however, creators are fearful that the site will be shut down and further deaths will go unreported. Many supporters from around the world have posted notices of solidarity and outreach. We salute our many men and women in uniform dealing with this conflict on a daily basis and pray for there safe passage home. American lives lost as of ( 1/19/07): 3,135

Books & Movies-R-Us. Kudos to Literary Pride, a local gay book club on securing author,( Dancer at the Dance) Andrew Hollerman and there participation in the upcoming Literary Festival, April 20-22. Also the newly formed, Cinema Pride, which recently hosted a movie night at Easy Street Lounge ,307 W. 7th street. We encourage your support of these new outlets for your entertainment pleasure and tell them you heard about it here.

Amber Alert update: We were informed by Little Rock's Pride Committee President, Joe La Fountaine, ( in reference to our posting on the whereabouts of the local black gay community) that the "welcome mat" was out to the Black gay community for imput into this year's activites. We'll keep you posted...

Pride Profiles updates: A hearty thanks to Little Rock Pride. com for asking for my participation in the Profiles in Pride spotlight on there site. The column highlights community members and their personal reflections. To view, jump to: www.littlerockpride.com

News from the fringe and more...part 2

The drum beat of news from the fringe keeps getting louder with each passing day. My e-mail box is teeming with tidbits of the odd, obsurd and those who haven't learned the lessons of others who have: "opened mouth and inserted foot." If only I could get paid for making this stuff up. Therefore, let the games begin and chips fall where they may....

B-Ball Rant! Well, the apology pile has yet another victim. This time featuring NBA's Tim Hardaway who has spewed his "hate" for gay people on a Miami radio show. Mr. H who went on record as stating that he" didnt' want to be around gay people...I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States." Meanwhile a day later Mr. H, recanted and atoned in a statement from his peeps, "As an African American, I know all too well the negative thoughts and feelings hatred and bigotry cause...I am committed to examining my feelings and will reconize, appreciate and respect the difference among people in our society.." In our opinion, Mr. H. was only stating, what he really feels and actually believes, whether in the locker room or not. Thusly his apology rings hollow and contrived in light of his bannishment from the All- Star activites or the picketing outside his business. Mr. H. needs to check his self before he completely fouls out. This attitude is prevelant in the African American community and acknowledges that there is still much work to be done to address homophobia during Black History Month now and in the future.

Racism & HIV. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) new cases of AIDS/HIV are disproportionately affecting the African American community, especially Black women across the south. Therefore government sanctioned programs were devised to directly address this dilemma head on. Enter, JCCSI's, Many Voices- Many Men, funded by the CDC which offers empowering and prevention messages to MSM ( men having sex with men) in the black community targeting individuals who are HIV negative or in a status unknown mode. Considering the ebb and flow of AIDS funding, this area is lucky to have such a program serving central Arkansas. The program outreach efforts have been well received at certain bars until recently being deemed "racist," allegedly by Backstreet personnel (most notably by the Black doorman) and not allowed to distribute it's materials which included condoms. Yet, on the flip side, a similar program, AAF's Positive + Outlook Leaders, which targeted only "White MSM " seemed to come and apparently go without being labled anything other than a HIV prevention platform. We can't confirm if this program distinctly used "bar outreach," but it did openly advertise. Sounds like someone needs to use some of the funds in the coffers to attend some national conferences or check out our links so they can get a clue. The whole situation makes you go, "Hmmm?"

Q & A. Those who read this blog sometimes leave comments, text messages or face me down personally about issues I've raised or the opinions I share. I've decided to begin addressing some of these as they arise. One such reader wanted to take me task for our post "the United States of Understanding", and related post "Canned Liquor" in regards to the cancellation of Shirley Q. Liquor show across the country and our affiliation with a publication that promoted the show.

The then publishers and I had a robust discussion about the magazines promotion of that show and it's impact. Unfortunately, they took the position that it was a business decision and hadn't thouroughly considered it's implications until I raised the issue. In our conversation, I attempted to find a win-win situation, despite the adverstising that had already been agreed upon with the venue and obvious audience support. I didn't demand an apology, but hoped that opening a dialouge, contributing content and further raising some consciousness would be a great beginning to build upon. As of this post, and to our knowledge the venture has ceased publication. Part two of the readers observations analyzing the entire SQL conundrum were very thought provoking and will be an upcoming full length feature.

Yeah, I said it: " I don't know any Black people with HIV/AIDS or any who have died from it.

News from the fringe and more...part 1

After the start of this project, I was torn as to it's impact or service to the GLBT community or anyone else for that matter. I started out only with a monthly post or bi-monthly in attempt to get a feel for not only the technology but if I could raise an audience. However, I'm happy to report that it seems that you are out there and frequently reading our postings. I want to thank all those who have approached me with both positive and negative comments. I appreciate your candor and suprising insights, as well as, encourage each of you to share our musings with others either through links or virally. It is our mission to educate, inform and entertain...because we are the online destination for Arkansas GLBT community and beyond!

Today is February 13, the 44th day of 2007 and 13th day of celebrating Black History Month.

Community Amber Alert! Have you seen Little Rock's Black gay community lately? Beacuse we haven't. Therefore an Amber Alert has been issued in search of this unseen and basically unheard from group. In our recent research we have discovered pockets of individuals hangin at the Backstreet complex on some Friday nights, others have sequestered themselves at the nebulous club, The Split,( Asher/ Wright Avenue) that has many of us scratching our heads at what's really goin on in there. Our inside sources have told us that it's a mixed crowd that get's the party rolling around 1 a.m. until the wee hours. The last time I frequent this haunt I was intrigued with it's operations, namely that it was a rented "party space?" and appeal to a wide variety of folks. Just for the record, yes that included white folks, especially those of you inquiring to me personally about whether it would be O.K. to put your face in the place. However, it seems that the "DL" ( down-low) crowd has taken there interest to "straight" clubs such as La Changes, Elevations, DEEP and other hot spots in search of acceptance or reclusiveness. We couldn't get a straight answer from many of these devotees as to why they had opted out of gay nightlife. However, one individual stated that " those bars make me feel uncomfortable and unwelcomed. If you go out, they wan't to charge you again to enter or search you as if you were a criminal!" Meanwhile, we've notice that the welcome mat is out at Sidetracks, The Factory, and UBU, but with few takers. What gives? If you know, could you clue a brother in on the 411.

Rainbow Rappin. Congrats and props go out to rap artist, Jessie O. ( pictured above) on the release of his debut album, Exposed. A songwriter who has penned for Clay Akins ( yes, her) and worked on other projects has created a sensation in music circles with his catchy melodies as featured on his single, "I think I'm fallin in Love." According to J.O. as a same loving gender person he had some concerns about how this would affect his career however, he has decided that it would not deter him from his goals. I liked the cut and found it to have a infectious hook and cute lyrics. If you want a sample go to: www.myspace.com/babyjmusic

Canned Liquor. Thank God venue owners in Los Angeles, Hartford and New Orleans came to there senses and cancelled the insipid and offensive, Shirly Q. Liquor show performed by Charles Knipp. All the venues expressed a concern for community unity and the insensitivity that such a show promotes. Unfortunately, this same show played to a welcoming crowd in Hot Springs and had YouTube clips posted. As producer of this forum we addressed our distaste in a previous post( The United States of Understanding) and in letters to the Editor in Hot Springs. Our attempts to raise local consciousness as to the nature of this show was met with resounding silence.

It's My Turn!! Dina Matos McGreevey estranged wife of former NJ Gov, James McGreevey is going to tell all in her new memoir, called " Silent Partner," due out in May 2007. Matos McGreevey has stated," I'm sick of media conjecture, now here's my side of the story, and ditto on that intimate details business!" Emphasizing the speculations from onlookers about the nature of their sexual realtionship in relation to his national coming out as a Gay American. On the flip side, I can't wait for Gayle Haggard's book detailing her attitudes about her Meth-using, sex-buying, Rehabed evangelical husband, Ted Haggard or Char Barnes, wife of another DL Colorado pastor who admitted to having gay sex in the rockies. Talk about six degrees of christian seperation. Go Figure!

Stuff bustin out all over....and more! part 2

Talk about "bustin out," in 2007. We asked for citizen journalist to weigh in on what's going on locally, statewide, nationwide, as well as internationally and the inbox is filling up with your info. Many thanks for your contributions and keep them coming. As we have previously stated, this site covers the GLBTQ community and beyond, with a focus on current information, profiles, showcases and educating. The Body Politic is dedicated to offering a well rounded view of a diverse body of people and the subjects that impact them. Fasten your seat belts and gird your loins, because we are coming at you fast and furious with more of what you've been looking for! We may have to go on a daily post just to keep up!

We are family in Black History Month! John Amaechi, (pictured above) former NBA player with the Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz, will discuss his upcoming book, Man in the Middle, on ESPN's Outside the Line, recalling his career experiences in the league as a gay athlete. Mr. Amaechi has been beset with rumors and speculations about his sexuality throughout his tenure with the league despite his performance. Various other blogsite have had extremely nasty and homophobic comments posted by readers and pundits. Even though there are other athletes who have come out with their struggles, I was saddened at the verve of hate directed at this individual who has also been a philanthropist, positive role model and certainly not hard on the eyes. According to the book jacket, it was "ghost written" by Anonymous and It's available at Amazon.com

Congrats to "Soul" Super Bowl winner Mr. Tony Dungy, head coach for the Indianapolis Colts,as the first African American coach to capture the title. His overall committment to determination and affirmation of his faith as a foundation is credited for his success.

Pink Spectrum-MIA...The local tabloid, Pink Spectrum, seems to be MIA,(mising in action) from circulation. The publication was hearlded with much anticipation from it's publisher's Shon DeArmon and James Porter in March 2006 as a "alternative nightlife magazine" with a primary objective to "unify and celebrate in diversity...growth... and positive change in the pursuit of peace." Howvever, we are unaware of any new issues produced in 2007 and calls to the offices have gone unreturned or unanswered. We'll keep you posted if there is a response to our inquires.

Party over Here!!!...Talk about activity, the north shore's Sidetracks is a buzz with a head spining calendar of events and foot-stompin good times in February. (We hear that the Super Bowl party was off the hook!) Entrepreneur's Jim and Phillip have put up the good fight to fullfill the much needed "Welcome Home," atmosphere in the community, mostly without cover charges! If you are looking for it, most likely they've got it planned. Ranging from Wednesday's Progressive Happy Hour, Holiday parties, new Monday Latin/Salsa night and let's not forget the food. Yes, food and more food including a Friday midnight breakfast and 1st Sunday Potluck. Why cook, when you can indulge on free buffets, drink specials and good company from "John" Mr. DSRA , who makes everyone feel sexy! Check it out: 415 Main Street, North Little Rock 501.244.0444 and tell em you heard it here first.

HIV/ AIDS Intervention: Jeremy Martin, program facilitator of Many Voices- Many Men, a HIV-AIDS prevention project funded by the CDC and hosted by JCCSI is seeking participants throughout the greater Central Arkansas area. The program target's the African American MSM (men having sex with men) community in an effort to further educate in an non-judgemental setting complete with the offer of free HIV testing. Each participant should either have a negative or unknown status. AIDS has reached epidemic porportions in the Black community, with Black women being overtly affected. After completing the sessions, gift certificates are awarded. For more information contact 501.663.7166, ext. 105

Under the Crown...And the winnner is, Sasha Harris, Miss Gay Little Rock 2007, with Alexis D. Wolfchase as 1st alternative from a field of five contestants. The pageant held February 4 at Backstreet was also the coronation of Miss Gay Arkansas America 2006, Raven St. James, former 1st Alternative to Taylor Monroe whom abdicated the title last month. Congratulations all around!!

Fast Fact: Arkansas' legislature on 2.7.07 again failed to pass the Equal Rights Amendment with a vote of 10 to 10. Only 35 states have ratified the measure causing it not to be amended to the constitution.

And the Beat goes on and on and on...

Producing this site and validating the material to be featured is not only daunting but has it's daily challenges. Especially as I consume a dizzying array of press releases, suggested topics from readers, observations and a host of publications from coast to coast. Creating this forum as my personal pulpit hasn't been designed to sit in judgement but rather reconize when there's an "800 pound gorilla in the room," when it's unapparent to others, present progressive solutions and offer the voice of those who feel powerless. Furthermore, embarking on this endeavor in an attempt to service the complex GLBT community took hutspa, a certain amount of moxy and insight. September 19, 2007 will mark our fourth year of growth, not to mention perseverance with tech changes. All while I pondered how to develop an audience in a sector of the Arkansas populous that had not been tapped or considered viable. Therefore, I affirm the pillars of our mission statement: to inform, educate and entertain. It all comes down to the old adage, "no guts...no glory."

In celebration of Black History Month and our efforts to keep it fresh, we will feature links to Jengo TV, a new BGLBT media portal featuring the interview show, Inside Blast and other lifestyle channels. For a sneak preview click to: www.JengoTV.com

Noah's Arc grounded: The ground breaking and original Logo series, "Noah Arc," has been cancelled according to network executives. The show conceieved by I. P. Polk, was the first commerical product that openly demonstrated the diversity within the Gay black community, the complex, yet multi-dimensional aspects of Black men and issues that are often not discussed. The assemble cast( as pictured above) was headed by Daryl Stephens as Noah, a coming of age screenwriter living and loving in L.A. with a close knit support system of family. Plans are underway to complete a feature film in 2008. If you missed this series (and you should not) either buy the DVD box set at logoonline.com or through Netflix's.

Check your local schedules for events for National Black HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day, February 7, 2007.

Discussion in the House: The question of forming a local GLBT chamber of commerce is still on the table for discussion. We are encouraging your comments both positive and negative. This issue resulted from the concern that local GLBT businesses are not easily identified or accessable, especially for newcomers to the city or approachable for sponsorships. In major areas, there are a host of magazines and newspapers with resource listings plus signature pockets of commerce such as Houston's Montrose, OKC Northwest, Cedar Springs in Dallas or West Hollywood. I am sure that each of these areas have vital issues that are widely debated and contested. Therefore it's imperative that at least an open forum be pursued about organzing such a group with so many pro's and con's.

Two Snaps and a Circle: In reference to a 1/31/07 post concerning The Factory, we received this text message (2/1/07 )reprinted as sent from management:

"I would like to offer to you my sincerest regrets that my having to rush out the door due to a death in my immediate family purturbed you enough to slam us on your blog site. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have cause you. Btw, the bar was closed less than an hour before a replacement arrived."

First, our condolences and prayers in your time of bereavement. We are not so shortsighted that we lack understanding of life's untimely emergencies. The mention of this incident wasn't our attempt to "slam" anyone but was in response to other guest who were perplexed at the situation and "hoped all was well". It's suprising that this post gave rise to a speedy response when there have been no "thank you's," texted or otherwise for all the positive ink given to promoting The Factory or area businesses unilaterally. Finally, characterizing patronage as "perturbed" or "inconvenienced" is counterproductive, but sage advice is priceless.

Congratulations to Mark "Spanky" Wetzel for being choosen, GLBT Person of the Year. Mr. Wetzel will be honored as apart of the FACES of Pride show at UBU, 824 W. Capitol,(501) 375-8580. Sponsored by Little Rock Pride Committee. Suggested donation of $5.00 will be accepted at the door.

Stuff bustin out all over....

"Stuff is bustin out all over," and we are in hot pursuit of posting breaking news, updates, links and all the vital info we can muster. There are enough scheduled events coming up to make your head spin! As your online destination, it is our mission to gather, disseminate and promote as many national, statewide or local happenings as possible. We encourage your participation as either a citizen journalist or bystander who's got the goods on what's really going on in our community. Therefore, ladies and gentlemen and all those who haven't decided...the news!

In Salute to those comrades who shared their visions ,passions and strength,The Body Politic acknowledges Black History Month 2007. We will highlight significant individuals throughout the month as a means of reaffirming the contributions of African Americans within the culture.

NWA Sounds off: Kudos and "high five's" go out to various members of Northwest Arkansas's progressive community. In conjunction with there recent Gender Identity presentation at UUC-fayetteville, they were highlighted on a segment of National Public Radio which aired 1/28/2007 with a subsequent website feed available 2/2/2007. Also,NWA Community center President, Donna, accompanied by other members traveled to Little Rock in an outreach effort to meet local activist, witness the swearing in of Kathy Webb,(Dist. 37) as the first openly gay person elected to state office and check out the local color. The Body Politic applauds our NWA brother and sisters for there tremendous surge forward. As of 2007 they have a new toll free number for assistance, 1.888.391.9222

Yippe Ki Aye...: It seems that the management and membership of Northside's, Sidetracks, just won't rest until you've been eithr fed or entertained. According to Bar Manager, Hank, the calender is simply bustin loose with a range of activites that speaks to all levels of the community. Congrats go out to Team Jackie and Buffy for having the winning chili recipie in the recent club cook-off. Despite stiff competiton sources state that the two women had a robust, yet flavoful concoction that wowed the judges. The gang from Easy Street were awarded 2nd with Scott Harper in third place. And it doesn't stop there. A new Thursday night "freefall" featuring area musicians will start 2/1, at 7 p.m.,featuring singer/songwriter Brenda Lyons, who will bring her brand of unique music to the clubhouse. There is no admission charge. For more information join Sidetracks Yahoo group. Click to: http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/sidetracksnlr/join Tell them you heard it here first!!!!

Discussion in the House!: In our last posting we raised the question: Is Little Rock ready for a Gay Chamber of Commerce? Some of the talking points all ready starting to trickle in concern whether organizations such as this are elitist or attempt to manipulate. Are our rainbow dollars being dilluted in an attempt to "mix & mingle" with tolerant heterosexuals? A local Chamber Vs. Ole' Boy Network of doing business in Little Rock? Chamber Creation 101: Who and How ?
As usual we are seeking valuable imput and thought provoking viewpoints community wide. Please note that your comments will be posted, so if you can't stand the heat in the kitchen, then don't come in here and try to cook with us.

Crowns-R-Us!! Taylor Madison Monore resigned 1/28 by letter to the Pageant Board of Directors as the current reigning Miss Gay Arkansas 2006. The title has been assumed by Raven St. James, First Alternate. The annual pageant seasons begins with the coronation of Miss St. James, Febraury 4, prior to the begining of Miss Little Rock preliminary, being held at Backstreet, 1021 Jessie Road. Call Ken Brown, 664-2744 for more information.

A Factory Re-do: As we see it, The Factory, 412 louisiana, has become the communites answer to the Rubics Cube due to there ever changing schedule of opening times, personnel changes and activites that have many folks scracthing there heads. Case in point, on a recent evening the club was slated to be open,(including an illuminated "open" sign) yet the doors were locked leaving guest standing in the cold speculating about the situation. There was no notification posted of any kind, despite a text message that was sent out to the "text circle" alerting them to the addition of new pool tables and drink specials. Here's our two cents. If you are going to earn the respect of patrons then putting your best foot forward always will take you in the right direction. In business, either your put up or close up. Think about it!

Talking Out Loud 2007

January is exiting stage left as the new year get's off to a roaring start with so many juicy topics. The new Democratically controlled Congress is in an uproar over it's rubics cube called Iraq, President Bush is entrenched into his mindset that victory is at hand, VP Dick Cheney is all but tripping the light fantastic with his assessment as he rebukes those who dare ask about daughter, Mary's decision to have a child with her LTC( long time companion- 15 years and counting), Heather Poe. The VP gave interviewer Wolf Blitzer that "no you didn't ask me that shit" look and stated that the question was simply "out of bounds." Oh how we disagree with his premise that Ms. Cheney's choice to have a child is somehow private, when she herself has put every one on notice about her life with her very public book, Now,It's My Turn. Wolf Blitzer gets a "attaboy" for staying professionally stoic and only slightly rebuffed.

Gay Rehab...Who knew? Could the old saying, "only in California" be reinstated as the wack state of the Union trots out another star for a public flogging. This time Isaiah Washington of Grey's Anatomy fame, was being taught the lesson that "all that glitter isn't gold," even if you are apart of a hit series. Do not pass Go, but go straight to REHAB. In case you missed it, Mr. Washington has been duly accused by T.R. Knight of dropping a "F" Bomb on him while on the set, subsequently causing him to be "lanced," before he was ready as told to talk show host Ellen. Meanwhile, according to Mr. Washington's peeps, he is quietly atoning for this indiscretion and will be back more gay friendly, as the cameras roll very soon.

No Envelops,Please: The Little Rock Pride Committe has announced that it has cancelled it's Academy Awards fundraiser due to scheduling conflicts. However, it's February 9th, Faces of Pride show will go on at UBU,824 W. Capitol. Tickets for other area events and informational booths are also tennatively planned.
Need more info call the club, 501.375.8580

Local GLBT Chamber of Commerce? The idea is being floated within the community that Little Rock should explore creating an GLBT Chamber of Commerce, similar to other major cities. A chamber could harness the power of local businesses and assist in creating a hub for organizations to canvass for sponsorships, networking and maximizing resources. This is a novel idea and has worked in other cities who also host Expo's and have been instrumental in creating "rainbow districts." We support the concept and would hope that it would find enthusiatic supporters. Feel free to comment and share your insights with us.

ART 4 You!!: The Art Scene, 201 Maple Street in North Little Rock is ready for the communities talented tenth to come forward and share there artistic sides. Each 2nd Friday of each month the venue offers art supplies, socializing and a chance to create your Mona Lisa with provided models. The cost is $10 and the experience is priceless. Stay tuned for more from this new hot spot!

From the Yeah I said it file!:
Naomi Campbell, fresh from yet another court date has decreed the following... "Any drag queen who wears anything less that 4 1/2 inch heels are wasting their time. You either do it and go the whole distance or don't even bother."

New Power Generation

Donna Summer in tribute to Luther Vandross from a French video release.

From the where are they now file: If you have had enough of the cold weather and decided you may need a getaway, try checking out songstress, Donna Summer who is back in the mix with two appearances scheduled for 2007. First stop, Universal Orlando's Mardi Gras Celebration, February 2 and March 3 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As the planning for GPW 07 get's underway, wouldn't it be great if talent of this caliber could be included in our line up similar to the larger cities that have Pride day's that are off the hook and memorable. Of course, this begs the question, how much excitement could be amassed or that all important creative sponsorship that would be instrumental. As I understand, the pride committee has had some "verbal" committments and are desperately seeking firm obligations from interested sponsors. However,as an event planner by trade, such cooperative agreements have to be forged long in advance and certainly cultivated with a "win-win" factor. Especially for the sponsor, who look for returns on there investment and organizers who hope to keep future awards. It's my two cents that, it seems like there's a lot of work to do in a short period of time with some very limited resources.

United for Equality 2007: United for Equality is the national theme for GPW celebrations around the country inconjunction with the Little Rock Pride Fetival scheduled for June 3, 2007 at the Rivermarket. As a prelude, the committee will host, Faces of Pride, Febraury 9 at the UBU nightspot and a local Academy Award bash. Organizers are also seeking supporters for their, "Circle of 100" patrons list. Donating $100.00 will help underwrite festival expenses and general organizational support. Click to:www.littlerockcapitolpride.org

Benefits-R-Us 2007: It is an acceptable practice of Non-profit organizations to rely on donations, grants, sponsorships and fundraisers to offset there operational cost and client services. However, The Body Politic was intrigued at yet another fundrasier, hailed as a "Golden Globe Watch Party" held for AAF at Easy Street piano bar Monday, January 15, that seemed to lack any guest. Sources state that the proprietor was fully prepared to entertain, but was chagrined at the turn out, including most fellow board members who failed to attend. Not to mention the lack of publicity the event was given by the in-house committee. In a last ditch attempt to save face, the owner resorted to using his cell phone list to entice attendance. Could the community be suffering "fundraising" fatigue or is this another occassion of inept planning syndrome? Stay tuned...

The Hustle and Flow continues...

What a difference a few weeks make, as we continue to gather steam to forge into 2007 covering the LGBTQ community at large and beyond. Our committment to the AIDS crisis remains paramount with our participation in the National Black AIDS HIV/AIDS Awarness Day, February 7. We will continue our partnerships with YOUTube, Evoca and newsfeeds in our mission to be your online destination for the most up to date news, video, podcasting, commentary as well as an information portal. However, doing our best means encouraging our readership to giving us your best leads, comments, corrections and breaking news from your neck of the woods. The year is just getting started and we are anticipating the excitement to take us to new heights!

Show me the Money! At post time we are still awaiting an accounting announcement for all the benefits that were held on behalf of the Arkansas AIDS Foundation to assist with client services. To date, no figures have been released via website or press release, especially those associated with the much ballyhooed, Simply Red bash held in December. If you've got th skinny on how much was raised share it with us. However, Kudos go to Raven St. James inconjunction with the Helping People with AIDS fund for a raising $3500.00 for there direct client services. According to a posting on the Miss Arkansas website, St. James acknowledge both statewide and local participation.

Crown Season 2007: The annual state impersonator pageant calender is taking shape as qualifiers line up to assume available titles. The announced pageants will be held at the Backstreet/ Discovery Complex and are as follows:

Miss Little Rock, February 4
Miss Discovery, March 11
Miss Capitol City, May 27

The season culiminates with preliminary winners in the Miss Gay Arkansas America coronation later in the year. Pageant officials have also announced that Male interview will be insituted as an optional category in this year program. Our insider sources have whispered there odds favorite to win this year's competition...
and the winner will be, Raven St. James!

Dont Play it again Sam!: The rumored addition of a "piano atmosphere" at The Factory has evaporated in leiu of the on again and off again,(an may I add, very tired) Tuesday night Karaoke fest. Owners had floated the idea that a piano would be added to offset the complications with keeping a Karoke DJ and lack of participation. The piano was to be added to the caberet area and a host would be tickling the ivories for happy hour guest and beyond. Yet,apparently the concept was dismissed in favor of more of the same wannabees warbling there way to their 15 minutes of fame.

Rocky Mountain High: Denver, Colorado has been choose as the site of the Democratic National Convention and receives high praises from the National Stonewall Democratic organization citing the city as a "welcoming environment," for the LGBT community. NSD has chapters around the country, including Little Rock, will provide a national training forum to be held in Las Vegas, NV/ March, Oklahoma City/July, and Manchester, NH/ October.

Apology Go-round: The list of personalities, entertainers, politicians and who-evers who must get on the "Apology-Go-Round continues this week with Isaiah Washington of Gray's Anatomy fame, who said he didn't berate co-star T. R. Knight by calling him the "F" word, (yes, faggot) on the set of the series. Plus he denied his involvement to press at the Golden Globe Award, but later sort of recanted and sent out another lukewarm apology. Meanwhile, Mr. Knight shared his emotions with talk show host, Ellen, stating that her personal journey had also help him with his sexualaity being "lanced" into the seering hollywood spotlight. Subsequently the backlash from this incident has resulted in an online petition with 9,000 signatures calling for Washington's head to be removed from the show. From where we stand, "political incorrectness" and homophobia still loom large in tinsel land.

Fast Fact: Congratulations to the Northwest Arkansas GLBT Community Center for establishing a toll free number to access local services and information. The number is 1.888.391.9222

King Holiday 2007

In 2005 I had a chance to visit the Lorraine Motel complex in Memphis,TN site of Martin Luther King's final day and assasination. The entire time I spent there was moving and allowed me a chance to use my imagination of how turbulent those times were and the atmosphere that permeated the air. Each exhibit stirred deep emotions and forced me to wrap my mind around what a challege those pursuing civil rights must have endured. As a history buff I was more than enthralled with the musuem's artifacts and attention to detail, including, the actual room King stayed in,video presentations, James Earl Ray's passport and the bullet's fired on that faithfful day. I found it eeriely unsettling as I gazed to the balcony of the hotel from the window sill used methodically by the assassin. Kings legacy of non-violence and committment to unabashed service to mankind are benchmarks that are still revelant today. However, our world is still grappling with war, poverty, immigration, globalization and the enviroment. King's words of compassion, unity and dealing with people based on "character not their skin color" continues to echo. I applaud the advances that have been made overall, even though I can remember just years ago when Gay bars in this state had multiple carding rules and exclusion policies that we now abhor. Yet they exisited, after King and in some areas of the country are still being challenged. The homophobia that is prevelant in the Black community and supported by the church has had devastating affects on individuals living with HIV/ AIDS, gay youth and those in a comming out experience. Correta Scott King aptly acknowledge this issue in various speeches around the nation and implored African American's to rethink their position and learn to embrace those being spured. It would be my hope that as we celebrate his birthday, that we reflect on our committment to empowering others and offering our talents to assist with making the world a better place. I challenge all my readers to share your thoughts on how King's legacy has affected your life and what you will do to help continuing to affirm his mandates for our world.

Back to the Hustle and Flow...

The recovery continues, with four weeks and counting to our full bounce back to fighting mode. Some therapy and R& R have proved instrumental all around in this portion of my makeover. I'm very grateful to all those who have sent their postive vibes and well wishes. All this people power from healthcare workers, personal prayers and concerned individuals have filled my soul with a healing force. Thanks to all! On another personal front, I would like to acknowledge my 13th Anniversary to my partner, James. Our "ying and yang" realtionship has endured much and we hope to have many more. Our motto and mantra for a successful realtionship can be found in the words of William Smith, "Love is not a matter of counting the years, it's making the years count."
And now the Hustle and flow...

Backdated Comments: In case you missed it, we hosted a lively discussion on corporate giving to local organization, especailly needy start-up non-profits such as the NW Arkansas Commuity Center who received a $5000.00 award from Wal-Mart. The discussion took off in a variety of directions sometimes with passions flaring and nostrils glaring. As moderator I read all the comments and realized that I could further step to plate by offering some capacity building information that may not have been accessed by this organization. I don't have to reinvent the wheel, nor do they, there are many portals and sites galore that have practical ideas that can be applied to their situation. Therefore, I plan to commit several posting and personal mentoring if needed by offering some creative methods that have benefited grassroots organizations both small and large. Of course, these will only be suggestions. The real heavy lifting will still be the responsibility of the stakeholders who want to see the organization succeed!

VIGIL 2007: The 14th Annual Vigil, Jaunary 15, 2007, 8:30am, commemerating the life and leagacy of Martin Luther King, will be held at the M.L. Fine Arts Center on the Philander Smith Collge campus. The program is open to the community at large and everyone is encourage to attend.

Gathering of the Minds: The Queer Coalition meeting is still being planned for February in Conway Arkansas. For more information go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/queer coalition

JCCSI presents the 3rd Annual HIV/ AIDS Conference, February 1-2, 2007 The Theme is Expanding the Circle of Compassion, with workshops, seminars and luncheons at the Peabody Hotel. Click to JCCSI.ORG for agenda and registration information.

National Black HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day: February 7 is the National reconignition of testing, education, and treatment for HIV/ AIDS in the African American community. Locally, plans are being formualted with details to be released. As they become available you will get here it first. The Body Politic will host video, commentary and information highlighting this key event beginning January 22 through February 7, 2007.

FAST FACTS: Can you hear me now? Apparently a phone number listed as the Arkansas AIDS Hotline,(1.800.342.2437)is actually a CDC health info directory, that offers a wealth of health info to wade through via vocal prompts. But, unfortunately has nothing to do with actual direct services available in Arkansas.

The 24/7 Catch Up

As reported last post, we are in a recovery mode and expecting a full bounce back in a few weeks. I would like to thank those who shared their concerns and well wishes for our speedy recoup. Being able to post has become apart of my therapy in the overall recovery process, as I've always embraced the mantra, " the show must go on!.."

GLBT Person of the Year. As I understand the voting should be completed and I'm assuming the tabulations will be announce shortly. The assortment of candidates was very interesting and the hightlights from each colorful. However, I'm trying to determine what differentiates this reconigtion from the Gay Pride Awards solicited during GPW 2006, which balloted an array of candidates (persons) and businesses that were deemed noteworthy for their contribution to the community. Meanwhile, apparently using some of the same criteria cited for the "Person" designation. I fully support acknowledging trailblazers and those front line contributors. Because reconizing these indivdiuals is an important factor in organizational survival, community pride, as well as stakeholder interest. However, I suggest that some caution should be taken not to dillute the significance of such an award with too much overlaping or redundancy rendering the entire process moot.

Arkansas Legislature Returns!: The Arkansas legistaure will be returning to the State House for yet another year of back slapping, bill swopping, scene chewing and catfish eating luncheons to boot as they create laws affecting us all. Despite all this ballyhoo, the national Gay Press has hearlded the election of Kathy Webb (Disrict 37) as a bellweather in Arkansas Politics. With such prounoucements as "First Lesbian elected to Arkansas Legislature in Arkansas History..." and " Gay politics gets ally in Arkansas..." Ms. Webb, also nominated as GLBT Person of the Year, seems to be have been rather mumm on the win, exactly what her platform entails (especially any GLBT connection) and how she plans to represent those progressive Hill Crest citizens. We were referred to her website, but it has morphed into an redirected potential candidates info page.

Benefits A-Go-Go Revisted: In December 2006 we noted that it was raining benefits in the GLBT commuity and we hoped that all these efforts would bring significant funds to the coffers of local organizations. However, we have only heard about a $350.00 contriubtuion from the Toys in Babeland benefit held at The Factoryheld Dec.9 Nothing about the "who planned this?" World AIDS Day fundraiser at Easy Street. Also upon checking the Arkansas AIDS Foundation website, there was no posted info on the Bachelor Party(Dec. 2) Compassion Awards (winners or cash) or recap about the big ticket Simply Red Party. If we can't find out how much was raised or donated for those deserving AIDS clients, then how about some pictures at least, so that we know that a good time was had by all!

Editors Note: All dialouge and comments are welcomed. It has been brought to our attention that some comments were unpublished or deleted. As moderator I make every attempt to make sure all comments are attributed to each post. If mistakes were made they have been corrected as quickly as noted. Ocassionally we have had some spam comments and have tried to obviously delete those. We would abhor the thought that any one would feel obligated to "kiss our feet" or bow to our point of view in order to participate here at The Body Politic. In closing, we were mentioned for GLBT Person of the Year but, not his holy eminence.

This is your life...Deal or No Deal!

Welcome to 2007 gentle readers as The Body Politic updates it's look as well as it's committment to open dialouge, shared viewpoints and aggresive discussion of the issues affecting our communities statewide. Our mission, to be an online destination for the GLBT community and beyond is firm and our focus, to asking the questions, searching for the answers and seeking the accountability required in our future progress is laser driven. Our pledge is steeped in the words of William Jennings Bryant who stated," Destiny is not a matter of chance; but a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, It is a things to be achieved." We are preparing for an exciting 2007 and we hope you will be willing to take the ride with us!

"This is your life...Deal or No Deal became very apparent to me during the holidays 2006, juxtaposed to my recent total Hip Arthroplasty surgery on December 12, 2006. This procedure was necessary according to my surgeon and I felt that I had sufficiently prepared my self with a pre-opt and post-opt mindset. I constantly reviewed material and even had watched the surgery live on the internet. I was aware that complications were at a minimal and I was confident that I wouldn't be in that slight margin. However, I was rudely awakened on December 23, seriously realizing that my pleasant progress had been impeded and the complications that I thought would elude me, had me gasping for life. I had developed an embolism and in seconds life took on a new complexity. My lifemate summonded the paramedics, ambulance and I found myself in a whirlwind of medical professionals rushing me to the SVI emergency room. Every moment seemed so precious, especially the oxygen flow that I clinged to as we weaved in and out of traffic. The uncertainty of how severe your case is, the range of personal thoughts that race through your head are staggering and meanwhile you start assessing where you are in your relationship with God. It's happened again, life teaching me that nothing is promised and each day is very important for me to make a positive contribution to the universe, no matter what "case" you may open, you must choose to deal or not deal with the consequences that come your way. During my extensive hospitalization, I had many hours to comptemplate and reflect on what's really important to me personally and profesionally. In the quiet darkness of my room, I embraced the thoughts that" God never gives you to much to bear..." I will never forget New Years Eve 2006 as James and I laid next to each other watching the TV coverage of the world celebrations of 2007 realizing that it's not about balloons, dropping balls or coffetti but rather the quality of life your share with the one you love and the life you share each and every day.

Deconstructing Cornelius... The Finale

Come all ye opinionated has been the driving force of the past few post. I am so grateful that silence will not be the norm in our community. Your voices and viewpoints are necessary to open dialogue as well as shape the issues that affect individual communities statewide. I'm certainly appreciative that many of you took the time to weigh in and take your positions with vigor. It is these robust, thought provoking and stimulating discussions I so value. As facilitator of this forum, I believe that every opinion carries weight and I should consider the merits of the facts presented. It's that logical element of my soul that forces me to re-examine my personal stances and reality check myself for a learning curve moment. The point that Wal Mart has barn stormed across the globe with questionable practices, demands and sorted in-house doings is factual. It can't be denied that a company of this size has peddled influence and had a pac-man attitude to all that stand in it's way. But as I see it, these tactics are not new to our economy or democracy. This country's history and for the most part, the world has been filled with large behemoth corporations that have participated in "acts of pillaging" to success. Let's not forget the Carnegie's, Rockefeller's, DuPont's, Ford, Hughes and Kennedy dynasty's had dubious business distinctions that were thought to be scandalous in their era. However, these tycoons have immortalized themselves with foundations, museums, concert halls and other ongoing sources of philanthropy benefiting a host of benefactors despite prior faults and insensitivity's. Apparently, Wal Mart is the latest incarnation of the beast that we either love or love to hate. Just as long as we can have low prices in our consumer frenzied nation. Consequently, as Arkansas's GLBTQ communities partakes of corporate benevolence, we must be willing to comprehend and accept the concepts of oppression, racism, classism and ageism that have been apart of our statewide past and present. This monetary infusion should be directed to affect change across the board, not as a means to perpetuate the status quo. Our efforts should definitely be augmented with creative fundraising, many dynamic funding sources relative to our locale and adapting grassroot models to keep the big tent erected on our own terms, not solely on corporate America. There is so much I could say and there is still much to say, therefore, the dialogue has begun, let's hear more voices from the choir.

Divinci Code ala Corneliusonpoint!

In our 24 hour world of news cycles and breaking news, The Body Politic dilligently strives to stay current. Often news within the GLBTQ community requires additional research and or fact checking. It is apart of our mission to disseminate, disect, deliver and sometimes be disquieting about what's going on in the four corners of Arkansas and beyond. This site has all intentions of informing as well as entertaining our readers from an empowering point of view. As 2007 arrives, our goal is to turn up the volume and seriously focus the spotlight on the global issues that are important to all aspects of the GLBTQ community overall. Hopefully we want to take a pro-active stance, acting as a conduit or facilitator to building bridges to a more dynamic future.

Who, What When. As World AIDS Day 2006 folds into the history books, we must assess the successes and improvements that are needed to make this day more significant in Arkansas. Around the state there were a smattering of activity that wasn't coordinated in a fashion that could have maximized it's total affect. The Body Politic offered and distributed poster art work supplied by the WAD committee. Yet, we discovered that only one poster was actually utilized. Meanwhile, a Run/Walk in West Memphis, candlelight vigil in Fayetteville, fundraisers in Little Rock, and forum at UCA were held without adequate promotion by the local GLBTQ community at large. Each event had it's significance but, to our dismay, still many people didn't have a clue that Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day or how to actively participate. Even the televised AIDS in Arkansas 2006 produced by AETN, featuring the Arkansas AIDS Foundation lacked the promotion that it deserved despite being coupled with more prominent PBS programming, A Closer Walk. However, even more interesting is the "premier AIDS service organization" perception the organization presented on a show that they didn't actively promote to the community or stakeholders.

Pride in the City. The Little Rock Pride Committee after being taken to task by miffed and annoyed lavender citizens is making strong efforts to create diversity among it's ranks by adding new board members from various elements of the community. According to board member, Joe Lafountaine, the group is on the move to be more inclusive and address divisive issues from the past and present. This move is to provide a "Big Tent" atmosphere that will spur additional particpation in coordinating Pride Week 2007 slated to climax at the River Market.

Corrections and FeedBack. We would like to acknowledge our savvy readers who catch our gaffs and miscommunications. In the last post we cited our Executive Producers participation in the WAD activity at the Uof A at Conway. We were informed, and rightly so, that this campus is the University of Central Arkansas and has no affiliation with the Uof A system. Point well taken and so stated.
We got feedback from reader "Nick" who called us on the carpet about our post concerning the contribution from behemoth Wal Mart to the NWA Gay Community Center. Nick was not happy with a host of the reatailers practices worldwide and felt that I should not encourage gay people to spend their dollars with this company. He further stated that bookstores, thrift shops, etc. are thriving without corporate cash. I concur that entities such at these are in fact operating and flourishing. I support the argument that such groups need to be self supporting. I've praised this concept and preached it relentlessly, yet the reality in Arkansas is the mediocre infrastructure to attract upwardly mobile gay individuals to contribute in mass or securing other funding sources that can sustain a group over a period of time. Wal Mart with it's warts and all may have other motives, most corporate giants do. But when the rent's due, green backs pay not philisophical differences. Also Nick had a mouthful to say about the $50.00 ticket price to the Simply Red fundraiser being held Dec. 8. He was "outraged" at the possiability that many HIV/ AIDS survivors may not be able to afford this event due to their income status or no stash of FREE tickets provided for those so inclined to attend. His concerns are valid and we will further investigate to whether tickets were provided or donated. However, in leiu of his distaste for corporate gifts, I personally challenge Nick to donate a Simply Red ticket to be used specifically by a survior. It's a put up or shut proposition. What you gonna do?

FAST FACT: In 1986 a World AIDS Day memorial was unveiled at Mac Arthur Park and gone virtually unnoticed since. Who owns this work and why wasn't it used as apart of the this years commemeration since it's been ten years since it's installation?

Yes, we said it and you can too. Keep it coming to: Nealix101@comcast.net

Tis the Season...Naughty or Nice?

The holiday season is in full swing and so have the tech demons that have plagued our system for the past week. After several tech calls and visits from assistants, we have resumed our posting and preparing for an exciting 2007.

We would like to thank all the gang at the University of Arkansas at Conway and campus group PRISM, for inviting us to participate in their World AIDS Day forum, December 1, 2006. It was a informative evening that demonstrated that college campuses are alive with activist who want to create dialouge and constructive solutions. I congratulate all involved and the coruage to take a stand!

This site has evolved since it's inception a year ago and it's our goal to continue in that track. It is imperative that our community continue to build bridges that propel not constrict, therefore, we applaud those who have added us as links and included excerpts within their publications such as the Pink Spectrum. A new issue should be hitting the streets within the next few weeks. So pick up a copy, pass it on and make sure that you support their advertisers. Our dollars can make tremendous statements, but only if you let the advertiser know that you are patronizing them because you saw their ad or sponsorship. No matter what you may think of Wal-Mart, you have to give them a high five for their $5000.00 contribution to the Northwest Arkansas gay community center without bowing to the zealots of the religious right. Most notably lead by Donald Wildmon of the American Family Foundation, who waged an E-mail campaign citing the reatailer as a "homosexual sympathizer." I hope that the NWA community flooded Wal-mart with lavender purchasing power( I did) and letters of thanks!

Missing in Action: A city of this size can circulate rumors within nano seconds and apparently the community is chatting about the Executive Director of the AIDS Foundation. Sources have packaged and repackaged an array of details about the "missing in action," director. At post time, we were referred from the public relations committee to President Elect, Dr.Dean Blevins for comment. However, we have yet to hear from him or seen any press releases clearing up any matters. Stay tuned. Meanwhile the group has gone full tilt into a fundraising blitz, including the Simply Red extravaganza (Dec.8) that seems like a circut party only for the oh-so fabulous, featuring TV Movie Critic, Renee Shaprio as Emcee and "Broadway Star Emeritus," Lawrence Hamiliton. This affair is sprouting wings with a planned After party being held at The Factory night spot. The after party admit is not included in the $50.00 ticket price to be seen at the bash. I hope that if we can't find out what's up with the leadership at the foundation, maybe the Simply Red folks will produce a splashy donation ceremony, so we will know if there was any money really left to donate for all those people with HIV/AIDS needing assistance.

FAST FACT: What was the last AIDS prevention message you can remember seeing or hearing in the greater Little Rock area? Let us know if you can think of one.

AIDS

The first annual observance of National Womens and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day was held March 10, 2006 reconizing the effects of the HIV epidemic has had globally and nationwide. As we participate in World AIDS Day Week of Action, Nov. 27-Dec 1,2006 we acknowledge that accountablity from the government and local officials is paramount in this ongoing struggle. It is estimated that African American Women account for 67% of AIDS diagnoses and that HIV is among the top four causes of death for this group. According to the CDC, women account for nearly 27% of all AIDS cases-a twenty point increase from 1985. In this spirit, we encourage everyone to contact their elected officials encourge them to support comprehensive prevention messages and funding for agencies serving the HIV/ AIDS Community. Remember...Stop AIDS, Now! is our call to action. Can we count on you.

World AIDS Day 2006 - Accountablity NOW!

December 1, 2006 is World AIDS Day and the world stands united around theme: STOP AIDS- Keep the Promise...Accountability! We at The Body Politic have signed on to be apart of the World AIDS Action week, begining November 27-Dec 1. This citizen action has been to desinged to challenge our recently elected officials and incumbents on not forgetting the issue of AIDS in America as well as globally. This continuing call to action couldn't come at a greater time, since the Ryan White Reauthorization act has yet to clear Congress, meanwhile AIDS service organizations are assessing budgets and the impact of services offered. The AIDS time clock ticks incesantly denoting increasing infection rates found to be uniquely high in southern African American communites, especially Black Women. Youth from 18-24 are often missing educational opportunities, getting mixed messages or insufficient campagins to combat stigma and sterotypes that could unknowingly expose them to the virus. Current CDC reports verify that both Afircan Americans and Latinos once tested are unaware of there HIV status. This alarming trend has created additional challenges for prevention messages. The National Minority AIDS Council has complete a comprehensive overview including the use of condoms in prison environments. In Arkansas, immates receive treatment while incarcerated, but only receive 30 days worth of medication upon release. Additional consultation of these individuals or refferals for medical assistance has not been adequately monitored. We encourage you call, write, FAX or e-mail your representative to remind them that this issue is still vital, has far reaching affects in our communities as well as universally if we have no accountablity. Please bookmark our site for some compelling commentary, the most recent statistics and direct links to resources for your consideration. Cornelius' Divinci Code Part Deux

As Executive Producer of this forum, I make every attempt to gather as much news worthy or "infotainment" items to share with readers in the GLBT community and beyond. Our goal is to spotlight, highlight and incite awareness about specfic issues and scrutinize our status quo with an inquisitiveness that will allow us to see the big picture of our needs. It's apparent that within our diversity there is a definite "disconnect"; thus enabling fragmentation that deflates our impact accross the board. The Body Politic wants to address the "800 pound Elephant in the room" paradigm that get's whispered about but not spoken directly too. If we are to continue to evolve and find viable solutions, we will have to embrace a "no pain, no gain," attitude. Therefore, all cards are on the table in our reporting and posting. We encourage feedback, observations, crtiticism and your viewpoints under our big tent. And now the news...

We would like to thank those who responded to our post,"Benefits-R-Us. It seems that this struck a nerve and has some folks re-thinking our benefit-a-thon attempt to suport our local organizations in area bars. It's understandable that NPO's need additional assistance, but these organizations should step to the plate and seriously infuse energy to their strategic development think tanks as a means to add to the bottom line. Such committees should comprise of the most innovative and creative thinkers of the group with a distinct action plan, not social climbers who want to fill their resumes with prestige or other ineffective warm bodies. In actuality, may we suggest that they either attend seminars on development, seek capacity building facilitators or hire a professional. Passing the the hat via cover charges or staid programming needs some serious attention.

Now that we've talk about what should be done, let's explore what's being done in our local verison of the Divinci Code. Take for instance, the Simply Red event supposedly benefiting the Arkansas AIDS Foundation. Overall the intentions appear worthwhile, however, after seeing recent 30 second commercials (yes, I said commercials!) one has to assume that Simply Red, is an "AIDS organization" promoting an internal "fundraiser." Especially since this marketing piece doesn't mention the foundation as a beneficary but briefly references the crisis itself with more emphasis on seeing "the most beautiful people eating fabulous food and dancing the night away," with vociferous emcee, Rene Shaprio to boot. More to my surprise, this TV piece also prominently touts other sponsors including the Diamond State Rodeo. But, according to DSRA inside sources, they state that their group felt sorta "slighted" after donating 2006 rodeo proceeds (about $2,000) to the effort, but SR organizers didn't extend a sponsorship table but wanted to further "sell" DSRA members acess to the fun fest for an additional $1,000! All this from a stealth clique that has not adequately defined itself. Is it an auxillary of the Arkansas AIDS Foundation, a Non-profit unto itself, or civic minded do-gooders who have decided to have a great circut party as a cause celeb.

Ideas A-Plenty are causing some consternation in the community as our "Season of Giving" A-Go-Go continues with duplication or replication being the norm. The Factory nightclub, originator of the Babes in Toyland benefit scheduled for Dec. 9, invovles a new toy collection for distribution. However, a mutal effort has been launched by "other individuals" using NLR's Sidetracks as a drop off site and has some people simply confused. Every one get's a kick out giving to kids, but it's the adults who can't seem to coordinate or communicate is the problem. More participation is always better, but clarity is paramount to gain efficiency. I don't like a lot of meetings but new technology has given us a brave new world of reaching out and touching! Let's try it sometimes.

Just Be Thankful...for One!

Being Thankful seems so simple, yet so complex. Each day as I arise and thank the creator for the priviledge, I can't help but think that as day breaks around the world, some one else's reality is starkly different from my own. What would it feel like to awake to hunger, fear, desolation and bleakness that has become commonplace to the citizens of Dafur. How would I deal with the explosions and stench of death that swirls in the air for Iraqi's bewildered masses who find themselves in the constant grips of terror daily or the ongoing distress of 2 Billion people worldwide who have no access clean drinking water. My problems seem so insignificant when I'm trying to find something to watch from 125 channels, choose what to have for breakfast or why there seems to be so much junk mail for me to throw away. Meanwhile, so many are suffering throughout the world and indeed in my nation or perhaps just a few doors away. Our complacency and "being about our business" often doesn't remind us just how fortunate we are or demand that we stop and think about someone else. However, as the holiday season get's into full tilt, I plan to take a few minutes each day and focus on some one else's plight other than my own. In the past my partner and I have participated in a variety of food drives, fundraisers, and adopting children at Chirstmas. This year we want to expand that thought by raising awareness and encouraging others to open their minds, eyes and resources to make a difference in their own special way. One, is not a lonely number, but a starting place for change. One person can make a difference. One voice adds power to the chorus. One letter could start a movement and once your get started it may be hard to stop. As we give thanks around the world, let's remember that there may be "one" person who may need our help. Stay Healthy, Wealthy and Wise...!

Shooting from the Hip!...Part 3

Our Shooting from the Hip post just couldn't cover everything in one post, therefore, we expanded it as a catch-all for those items that are just to smart to ignore. So with without hestitation we dive back into the fast facts and loose lips of the GLBT community and beyond...

We're Open!! Apparently the guys over at The Factory are determined to find a patron base somewhere by opening 7 days a week! The text messages are fluid and complete with club info concerning the nights offerings. The $10,000 question is where are the customers? What gives and where, oh where has the community gone, that the local establishments are befuddled as to what to do next to attract folks. Times they are a changin, but these shifts could be very detrimental to social life and may continue to keep folks at home. The resounding theme that we've heard lately from community members has been," there's nothing to go out for?" Say what!!

Benefits-R-Us: Our eyes are about to roll back in our heads at the unleashing of organizational benefits that have been scheduled or plan for the incoming months. We understand that many of these Non-Profits have skelton funding schemes at best but, exactly how many benefits can one community support. Especially since most yield very modest returns for the work they take to produce or significant branding of the group. Traditionally, most organizations have development coordinators and firm strategic plans to formulate future funding structures for the bottom line. I don't recall United Way or Heifer International using beefcake or other uninspired efforts to raise funds for the coffers. In full disclosure, I have been involved with this type of fundraising and became disenchanted with the lack of creativity and limited vision. Plus, I'm bored with too many meetings!

Talk about Blowin Up! Locally entertainers come and go, but stayin alive in the biz is tough. However, powerhouse Tionne Iman states that "he knows where's he's going and there's no stoping him, now!" Iman, a former city title holder and upcomming contestant in the US of A system has a sassy website, www.tionneiman.com that's got "everything Tionne" and more. The site features a gallery, guest book and links to some of his favorite sites. We will look for more from Tionne, including an exclusive interview, as we shine our spot light on him in 07. We think it's gonna get hot in here!

The Names Project: The quilts of the Names Project continues as this organization is seeking additional panels representing African Americans lost to AIDS. The quilt is often used as a teaching tool and art form that travels the country. According to organizers, the project would like to solicit groups, individuals or relatives to submit contributions. The Names Project has source materials to assist any interested parties with completing a design.

Shooting from the Hip!...Part 2

Last week BRAVO, an unabashed promoter of gay oriented content, entered the November Sweeps with a salute to the Girls of Comedy. Such luminaries as Paula Poundstone, Caroline Rhea, and red carpet acid queen, Joan Rivers harpooned, lambasted and get down right bitchy on a array of topics. Ranging from breast malfunctions, being man challenged and oddities of the world at large. Oh how we all love a little dishy dirt, put down or catty insult to help us through the day and the GLBT community can be at the epic center of it all. Case in point, the recent insipid nastiness of Boy Geogre of Culture Club fame, drug arrest or New York street sweeper,( you be the judge). Who collected an award for writing a song that he actually collaborated on with band mates and his "Diva- art- thou" attitude in regards to the new lead gender-bender singer, SAM Butcher, (pictured) for the rivived group. The rebirth of Culture Club will include a mini UK tour in December, documentary, new single and DVD. Of course,United States CC fans are waiting with baited breath for concert date announcements. I saw a video clip of the bands showcase performance and thought that perhaps the magic is back despite and without,Miss Geogre. O.K.!

From the pageant files. It seems that the current "excellence symbol" needs some lessons in class or either a tin cup. Apparently, the reining queen has made no bones about his level of poverty since participating in the national pageant, despite the state pageant being hailed as offering the largest prize package in the system. Thusly he has spent a great deal of time informing any one about his dilemma who will listen. Recently this queen bee showed no grace by groveling his way into an "unbooked" performance at a local club, subsequently whinning about how little he was compensated by the audience. Whew! All this from a contestant ranked 45th out of 49 at nationals. Go figure.

Organization A-Go-Go. Ever since the indictment and eventual trial of Lola Thrower, Lee Langston, Malik Blackmon and Rev. Lamar "Save our Children" Wright, the community has been basically "mum" about the verdicts and it's impact on AIDS services. The sentencing was varied ranging from 3 month home detention for Langston to community service for the good reverend. However Thrower, considered the "La Bella" master mind of this NPO pyramid scheme was given jail time. I'm greatly saddend that her "facilitating" abilities and base knowledge of AIDS funding became skewed by benefiting each player with paltry sums of cash and graft. I can't imagine the rationale used to justify these acts and the overall embarassment one would endure from friends and family. Not to mention the direct scrunity that the rainbow community spews in gossip, twardry remarks and other unsundry allegations. On the other hand it's unfortuante that this funding, if used properly could have uniquely put Central Arkansas ahead of the curve in services for the AIDS community. The propsects of having job training, meeting space, additional core services and a host of probabilities have again slipped through our hands needlessly. Our community has such a need for creative leadership with vision that incidents such as this continues to stagnate progress and future development. Ain't it a bitch. More about this issue next post.

Seeing Simply Red. Apparently some who received invitations from Simply Red / Arkansas AIDS Foundation were confused as to the nature of the event or had the group gone through a name change. It would behoove these entities to get on the same page with how this event will be marketed and too whom. Also strangely a ticket link is provided to the Red event but not to the Awards event,or a mention note about where the awards will be held on this marathon day of fundraising. The RED invite touts Lawrence Hamiliton as a "honorary Chair" but some board members were mystified about Hamiliton, how he became chairperson or his "entertainment value". Talk about efforts that seem lost in translation. According to sources, one local bar owner balked at placing poster material in their establsihment stating that "this organization's overall support is lacking until they need something from us."
Can you say... Kitty Kat Meowwww!

The Alphabet Soup Monte

Often when posting to this blog, I find that there are so many topics that need a mention that space and your attention span couldn't coexisist. I attempt to pack as much in to each segment, whether video, podcast, or the written word. Covering all aspects of a community is a daunting task, especially when that collective keeps expanding it's game face. The ubiquitous word "Gay" has mutated to a form of "Alphabet soup" that has supporters on all sides who support rearanging the order. Daily I read a variety of publications from coast to coast and the standards flucuate wildly without regard. Over the year's the evolution of this community has been staggering with many hard fought victories as well as disappointments. Thusly, we have been faced with the dilemma of finding terms of inclusiveness, which has given birth to LGBTQ. The Lesbian,Gay, Bisexual,Transgendered,Queer moniker is the new canopy that's suppose to represent the sum of all. It's a mouthful and often interchangeable depending on who you ask. With this in mind, it is our mission to outreach accross the alphabet spectrum as a conduit and clearinghouse of ideas, news, commentary, video, links and podcasts. It's important that we continue to analyze where we have been as a motivator for the direction in which we want to go. We stand committed to educate, update, and congratulate those who share our vision of human rights for all! And now the news...

RYAN WHITE CARE ACT STILL UNREAUTHORIZED
The Ryan White Care Act (H.R.-6143) that was stalled after the recent congressional recess will be possiably reconsidered as Congress reconvenes after the mid-term elections. Stakeholders nationwide are alerting constituents to contact their representative with letters in favor of passing this measure. The bill has been embroiled in a dispute with metro areas opposed to a proposal by Rep.Bono who wanted the funding formula reanalyzed with additional funds to rural communities. HIV/AIDS tranmissions and infection rates, uniquely in the black community, have continued to increase in the south. The Body Politic urges all community members to send e-mails, faxs or phone calls to your representatives urging the reauthorization of the act. Most Arkansas organizations and the services the offer rely heavily on this federal funding source. For more information @ www.KKF.org

Are you scared enough...?

All Hallows Eve, best known as Halloween has become big business with retailers, costume shops and venues that participate in the merry making. According to analyst this holiday rivals Christmas with a Billion dollar injection to the economy that reverberates nationwide. I have fond memories of Halloween's past and enjoy seeing some the the creative costumes that come from the demented minds of the community. Of course the GLBT collective has a "take no prisoners" approach to skewing popular culture unilaterally as well as without remorse.
However, as we indulge in the holiday we must also be reminded that there are actually real entities and homegrown forces that we should be monitoring closely. Their motives, tatics, and core bases seek to accelerate platforms and doctrines that could affect us overall. I can see this clearly in this year's mid-term elections, which have again demonstrated that "fear mongering" and gay baiting is still a weapon used by candidates such as Andy Mayberry, Jim Holt and others who choose to demean our existence by affirming inflamatory rhetoric and manipulated facts. The issues of Civil Unions or adoption have been deamonized by a host of Family and God organizations, authors and evangilist like Pat Robinson who purport to have the ultimate hook up with the almightly. My dear reader, we have much to be scared about as pockets of protesters have reached the depths of distaste by equating our lifestyles with the deaths of military personnel who have boldly given the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of an entire nation. This type of highjacking is not only mean-spirited but seriously dangerous once embraced. As a global citizen, I respect the right to civil unrest and peaceful protest, but I can't accept the insensitivity and reprehensible methods promoted by such groups. Each day polarizing moral messages and condemnation continues to poision our abilities to heal as one nation united. Consequently as a community, abdicating our responsiblity to the philosophy that "some one else will take care of it," is soundly unacceptable and foolish at best. Therefore, let the darkness fall with the sounds of clicking heels, bawdy laughter and howling jubilee in celebration of the many mask that will be worn, however, let us not forget that we must be dilligent in un-masking those whom gather at the altar of hate. Happy Halloween 2006!
