Reimagined National Civil Rights Museum Opens in Memphis

By Neal Broverman

The museum, the site of the motel where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, received a $28 million renovation.

This weekend saw the reopening of the National Civil Rights Museum at the former Lorraine Motel in Memphis, the place where Martin Luther King, Jr. spent his final hours.
Visitors can now relive some of the experiences that made up life in the 20th-century South, like sitting at segregated lunch counters and walking inside a vintage Montgomery, Ala. bus like the one Rosa Parks refused to move from. The museum still has King's room at the Lorraine intact; he was murdered on the hotel's balcony on April 4, 1968.

Curators worked to keep the hotel relevant for younger generations and to highlight other figures who made up the civil rights movement of the '50s and '60s. "We had to blend history, technology, information boards, artifacts, audio, video to create what we believe is an engaging museum," executive director Beverly Robertson told National Public Radio, which emphasized that the fight for equality is still ongoing, especially when it comes to LGBT rights.

Editors Note: I have been to this museum prior to its reboot and look forward to seeing all the new editions which continue to tell the civil rights saga and its impact on humanity. I highlight encourage readers to put it on your bucket list of things to do in 2014!

The Magic is Back in the Springs

Take flight this Summer at Magic Springs as you experience the thrill of skydiving, hang-gliding and bungee jumping all rolled into one! We call it, SKY SHARK. First you’ll be hoisted to the top of a 115-foot steel arch before plummeting in a free fall back to earth at speeds up to 50mph. I can't wait to maybe try this hot new feature at this park. I love a good thrill ride and I have a great time each time I roll through the gates. Watch this platform form for some updates and other posting about our upcoming visit.

From the Magic Spring's website it states that on this ride you bundle into the harness with a friend or two and wave bye-bye. You’ll stare straight down as you are hoisted up by a slim cable, until you’re so high you’ll hang in total silence 10 stories in the air with a birds-eye view of the entire park. There’s no turning back—the only way to get down is pull the cord.

You're then instantly released in a state of total free fall. Just when you think you're going to hit the ground, a steel cable catches your fall swinging you forward. You'll then soar into the atmosphere across Magic Springs Lake creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Don't forget that you can enjoy other thrilling rides such as the Wild Thang, Hawk and Rocket Machine to boot. As the Arkansas heat wave starts to burn, there's a great water park feature that is simply too cool as well. I have not done the water feature but this year may be a first!

If you decide to take on the Sky Shark just remember these quick facts about enjoying the ride, there is a 42" height restriction  Cost is $20.00 for single, $30.00 for double and $40.00 for triple. If you get there before me, holla and let us know what you think!!!
