Headwinds and Horizons Ahead

Does it seem like this year is moving faster than most or is that I just have so many bases to cover that time appears fleeting? Well no matter what the situation, this forum is powered by sheer will and the determination to keep posting the latest updates and breaking news from all angles of the rainbow. As our tag line states, "if you are thinking about it, then most likely we're talking about." Now let's get talking and then some...

LA Corp Networking Success

The Board of Directors of the Living Affected Corporation successfully launched it's initial Afterhours Networking session yesterday as an effort to continue its community outreach and branding of the organization. "I was excited about the possibles as well as meeting new people in my role as a board member," said Tonya Estelle. " I was hoping that it would be nice turn out plus we would begin something new to look forward to from the organization." she concluded. The group assessed through their strategic planning sessions that it was vitally important to scale up its brand visibility via introducing allies, prospectful donors and supporters to the new offices, volunteer opportunties, ongoing programming and services. Board member Davaron Anderson (pictured) said, " I believe that networking will be helpful by alerting the community about our mission concerning our vision to engage services that will transform our community in a positve way." He continued, " currently LA Corp is the only community based organization serving as a sub-grantee with a direct emphasis on affecting the HIV/AIDS infection rates of the Black MSM population. Even though we are focused in that area, it is our desire to evolve into a agency that will serve multiple purposes throughout the state." In attendance was Rev. Damon Jackson, designers Clyde Davis and Korto Momolu (pictured above), local advocate Mr. Bob Coffey, and independent music producer and dancer, Mr. Patrick Robinson. The board will announce shortly the entire schedule for the event and additonal fund raising efforts to support the organization. Additional board positions are open and qualified applicants can submit their interest by e-mail at info@lacorponline.org or by fax 855.792.5483. The Chicken Equality Continues Round 2

Wedneday's citizen action was well covered with those nifty 20 second snippets and archived video on the web. From what COP 24/7 can assess from that coverage, Facebook posting and other sources, there was a good turn out of allies and activist in response to the anti-gay marriage postion taken by Chick Fil-a CEO, Dan Cathy. Also putting his drum stick in the matter was former Governor Mike Huckabee whom called for an "appreciation day" for the company in his attempt to find some way to be revelant from his failed presidency attempts. I had to chuckle that the Huckster wanted take sides with a company who pushes out meals through a drive thru window since Huck use to quip negatively about getting any meals through your local drive thru. I guess none of that matters in this case. Adding to the silliness and not to be outdone is also failed VP candidate Sarah Palin who has had as many photo ops of her and hubby Todd taking home some "yard bird" versus moose that she famously waxed on about. And it just continues, especially the cash register which reports stated that Wednesday's sales soared to record heights. This Friday there is a scheduled "Kiss" demonstration that is to bookend the earlier weeks activity. Don't know if locals will be up to this one, but we'll leave the light on for any breaking info. Yet through all of this I imagine the CEO surmised that his choice of veribage may not be have been the best PR but damn it, it was good for the bottom line. However, in case you think this is something new, its purely not as I've stated that I have been aware of this outfit and its charitable nature to those groups who have anti-equality stances. Just for the record here's a snaphot of the organizations charitable arm named WinShape activity and where some of those chicken sandwich dollars ended up:

The WinShape Foundation is Chick-fil-A's charitable arm, created by Chick-fil-A founder and chairman S. Truett Cathy in 1984. WinShape has received a substantial amount of funding from Chick-fil-A: in 2009 alone, WinShape received $7,814,788 from Chick-fil-A Inc. WinShapeGave Over $1.7Million To Anti-Gay Groups. In 2009 alone, WinShape donated $1,733,699 to multiple anti-gay groups:
  • Marriage & Family Legacy Fund: $994,199
  • Fellowship Of Christian Athletes: $480,000
  • National Christian Foundation: $240,000
  • Focus On The Family: $12,500
  • Eagle Forum: $5,000
  • Exodus International: $1,000
  • Family Research Council: $1,000

More Pride in the City

Is it me or is PRIDE 2012 seems to be in some type of ongoing loop? Last week there were some type of pride activities that I have yet determined exactly what that was all about. But come this Sunday at Murray Park there will be a "community picnic" featuring music and food. The details were sketchy and trying to confirm details were problematic due to the "fluid" organizing that seemed to be taking place. If we get any updated we'll post ASAP. In the meantime,  I was made aware of the tensions and much of the "he said, she said" BS that plagues much of these efforts that in my opinion are a much a do about nothing much. Now comes the folks who announced this as "Black Pride" but when inquired to, stated that it was under the genisis of a new outfit entitled, "Arkansas CAN (Creating Awareness Now). With that said, I thought to myself, awarness about what and why? This is when I go into process mode to make sense of stuff that I'm not sure where it belongs on my "sense-o-meter." This happens to me often due to the amount of information that falls into the in-box and those whom want to share personally. Apparently to make sense of all of this you'll have to make sure that you are reading this slowly..., AR CAN is an outgrowth of the former, Little Rock Black Pride, that is not connected to the Little Rock Pride sponsored by other entities, that has nothing to do with Arkansas Black Pride which does and somewhat doesn't exist but is related to that other " reality reigns pride" produced by Global Rock Star Media as the "Official Little Rock Black Pride." Did you get all that? Confused? Then don't be because what I've determined is that much of these ponzi pride mash up's consist of many of the same folks who have "spun off" into doing their own things under different guises and agendas. For the life of me, I've been puzzled as to how effective these activites are and what outcomes are reached. Do they build community capacity to make change? Are their any learning components that are benefical to empowering anyone? Are their any leadership skills being developed? Why are their competing "prides" that seem similar in scope or entertainment value. Anyway, if it takes all this to fill a needed niche then so be it and make it so. Let the Pride roll on!
